About us
RefuSHE, a nonprofit organization operating in Nairobi, Kenya, is the first organization in Kenya devoted to protecting unaccompanied and separated refugee children and youth, with a special focus in supporting women and girls ages 13 to 23 years old from Somalia, Ethiopia, DR Congo, Sudan, Rwanda, and Burundi. We provide shelter, education, vocational training, case management support, and advocacy to participants and their children who have experienced the detrimental effects of war, the loss of their families, and, in many cases, kidnapping, rape, trafficking, unlawful detainment, and torture. We also mobilize members of the refugee community through educational outreach. At the core of RefuSHE’s model is the creation of a social network that empowers girls and young women to strive for economic self-sufficiency and become community leaders in their own right.

Over the past 4 weeks, RefuSHE has traversed different locations in Nairobi County, including Kasarani, Githurai, Kitengela, Ruiru, Kawangware, Rongai, Eastleigh, and Kayole—urban areas that are predominantly occupied by #refugees. During these weeks, we have introduced SHElearns, a digital learning and wellness platform that offers short courses in vocational training, business, and mental health. Examples of courses include hairdressing and beauty, online work, tailoring, building and construction, and many others. The goal has been to ensure refugees have access to the skills they need to become self-reliant while running their own small businesses. SHElearns is a free platform that can be accessed here: https://loom.ly/7txokz0 We at RefuSHE are committed to ensuring refugees have the necessary tools to be active members of society. 🤝 Visit SHElearns today and start your journey towards self-reliance!

RefuSHE recently assessed the impact of our Paracounselors program, where we've trained 15 urban refugees to become community para-counselors. This initiative makes mental health services more accessible and culturally relevant to refugees living across Nairobi's informal settlements. Our assessment of counselling recipients showed promising results: 1. 😌 Improved overall mental well-being 2. 🌟 Enhanced self-perception and awareness 3. 🧘 Better stress management skills 4. 🔄 High demand for follow-up sessions 5. 👍 Positive reception of counseling services Based on these positive outcomes, we plan to expand the program to reach even more refugees in need of mental health support across Nairobi. RefuSHE remains committed to addressing the unique needs of refugee women and girls. Refugee women and girls are often forced to endure incredibly difficult circumstances and unspeakable events. Alisa is a 19 year old refugee from DRC who has had to build her life from the ground up after a forced marriage that led to an unwanted pregancy.
