It was such a highlight to have Xbox Game Camp Africa in Nairobi last week. Huge thanks to Esteban Lora & Temi Afolabi from Xbox, and Melissa Boone, Elizabeth Van Wyck & Pierre Hintze from 343 Industries for all making it here in person; it's so rare and valuable to the community to be able to hang out face to face with such industry leaders. Well done Peter Zetterberg and the rest of Game Camp crew for putting it all together across the continent! Women represent the majority of mobile casual game players globally. They should also represent at least 50% of developers creating in the game. This is especially true in #Africa, where we have a clean slate to shape the industry in an inclusive and equal manner. This is a big focus for PAGG - Pan Africa Gaming Group in all of our studios across the continent. AkiraChix have been a great partner making that happen in #Kenya.

Proof that government regulation and taxation policy can have a real impact on shaping society. We started Usiku Games in 2018 with a firm, vocal anti-gambling stance. At that time, 1 million youth were throwing away money daily on SportPesa. In 2019, the Kenya Government, through the BCLB & KRA(KENYA REVENUE AUTHORITY) joined the battle. This week we've seen the proposed Finance Bill 2024 recommend an increase of gambling taxation to 20% on top of the 16% VAT and 30% corporate tax. The betting companies are now running for the doors. While I do feel bad for those employees who are losing their jobs, this is a massive net win for the millions of youth across the country who will no longer be prayed upon by this extractive industry owned by foreign entities. (at one point 70% of ALL direct foreign aid that was coming in to Africa, turned around and exited right back out on the form of repatriated betting revenues) The next challenge to face is that the BCLB regulation and the finance bill do not differentiate between "gambling" and "gaming" - this fails to recognize the positive work that the #GamingForGood industry is doing both in #Kenya and across #Africa. https://lnkd.in/dYn_tWMA
