Since 2015, we have worked with multiple impact enterprises that support micro-retailers to reach last-mile, underserved communities, providing vital income, essential goods and services to millions of families in Africa, Asia and beyond. Collaborating with CGAP and The World Bank, we are proud to present this report on the role of digitisation and financial inclusion for micro-retailers to boost their business resilience 👉 https://cgap.pub/4ckrKsd
Neighborhood convenience stores —dukas, kirana, warungs— are essential for the livelihoods of millions of people in emerging markets and developing economies. They also serve as crucial community hubs. However, owners of these stores encounter several economic challenges, the most acute being the ability to access finance. Our latest focus note, co-published with TRANSFORM, presents various business models that integrate these last-mile retailers into digital ordering platforms, providing them with convenience, transparency, and #FinancialServices. The paper also strongly urges key stakeholders to adopt an ecosystem approach to support these models, enabling them to grow and achieve scale and financial sustainability. Vane’s Mombasa breakfast food kiosk is not just a business but a lifeline. Initially driven by desperation to provide for her family after her husband lost his job during the COVID-19 pandemic, her entrepreneurial success means her loved ones never go to bed hungry. Vane, along with many food providers, faces financial strain due to fluctuating prices of essential ingredients like cooking oil and wheat flour making it difficult to manage costs and maintain profit margins. Still, she dreams of expanding her enterprise into a hotel, creating employment opportunities for others, and further supporting her family’s future. Vane is one of 700 Kenyan workers TRANSFORM's research partner Brink interviewed to gain insight into the country’s informal economy and co-create five visions for its future.
