In 60% of Acumen Fund’s failed investments, poor financial management was key. What if there was a better way to access the talent social enterprises need to succeed? Read on: I’m excited to publish a piece in NextBillion.net with our friends from Acumen, Daniel Waldron & Coco Lim: https://lnkd.in/dwciaPH4 The article looks at the unique challenges of getting the right talent at the right time and the right “size” for social enterprises, particularly those working in remote regions with the most underserved customers. We share a bit on a pilot Shortlist Professionals has been running trying to link SMEs and social enterprises to the right talent in more “bite-sized” formats (i.e., “fractional”), as an alternative to full-time hires. And the results have been promising… (We're still figuring out the best way to roll this out more broadly.) Have a read and we’d love to hear your feedback! And thanks to James Militzer for great editing and support as always :)

In 2020, I was shortlisted by Shortlist Professionals as one of 29 experts to mentor 15 small businesses in Kenya. Out of the applicants, Angela W., the founder of SisterSpeaks Global & Heels4Pads Foundation chose to work with me. We clicked right away. From the very beginning, we both knew what we wanted to get out of this experience which was a comms strategy for her business but our partnership went way beyond that. This experience got me thinking: what makes a mentor-mentee relationship truly successful? Shortlist Professionals laid a solid foundation with their selection process which really made my experience with Angela stand out. Read on and find out what made our experience truly positive.

The "Powering Performance: Strategic Talent Development for Business Excellence in Energy" event, organized by African Management Institute, focused on enhancing business excellence in the energy sector through strategic talent development. It brought together industry leaders, professionals, and experts to discuss best practices, innovative strategies, and the latest trends in talent development. The event aimed to empower organizations with the knowledge and tools necessary to attract, develop, and retain top talent, driving performance and fostering sustainable growth within the energy sector. Our Director Cassandra Kiereini joined the event to discuss the Energy Access Talent Initiative (funded by Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and The Carbon Trust) and what the program is doing to attract and retain talent in the sector. It was a great opportunity to share the insights Shortlist has gained regarding the challenges and opportunities talent face as they build their careers in clean energy. The event was not only fun but also a fantastic platform for networking with other key players in the energy sector. It was inspiring to see so many dedicated professionals come together to advance strategic talent development for a more sustainable future.

Great session today with Microsoft and Bowmans (Law Firm) on responsible AI. How can we address some of the challenges ahead? Read more from our CEO Paul Breloff and watch this space!

CEO & Co-Founder @ Shortlist | Connecting talent to opportunity across Africa, Asia and beyond (we're always hiring!)

Thanks to Microsoft and Bowmans (Law Firm) for a great “Responsible AI” session today. Lots of talk on policy, tools, compute capacity, and of course talent & skilling. Made me realize we’re often conflating what are actually 4 distinct and wicked problem statements: (1) At a labor market level, how do we avoid large-scale unemployment and dislocation as Gen AI threatens a huge range of jobs (particularly junior digital jobs)? I find this particularly scary as the digital labor market is flat and borderless, and there’s a risk that many of the most entry-level digital jobs (the ones the rising generation of African youth could fill) will be wiped out by Gen AI imminently. (2) At a broad-based professional level, how can everyone do their jobs better with AI? The reality is that all of us, across careers, sectors and seniority, can and should be making use of Gen AI to boost productivity, use data better, and make ourselves obsolete. This isn’t confined to techies and programmers; this is relevent to pretty much everyone in broad “knowledge work” positions across ops, HR, finance, consulting, and more. (3) At an African youth level, how can young people “get a job in AI”, and what does that even mean? This is more about understanding and developing the specific career pathways into the AI universe, which we’re just starting to understand. This includes engineering of course, but also a broad range of other job types around data annotation and cleaning, prompt engineering, automation engineering, and much more. (4) At a social impact level, how can we design more AI-based applications and use cases to drive more value and impact to those who need it? AI is poised to disrupt and transform a broad range of how the world works day to day, and hopefully many of those applications and use cases make life easier for those most in need — applications around health, energy access, food access, livelihoods and income generation and more. (In fact, Shortlist Futures / Shortlist Professionals is about to launch a new fund looking at positive use cases for Gen AI for women’s economic empowerment, job access and income generation - watch this space!) While there are certainly many areas of overlap between these problems, each needs its own attention, research, and creative solutions. Others in the room (Winnie Karanu, Martin Ndlovu, Isis Nyong'o Madison, Rositsa Zaimova and many more) — what did I miss?

We’re proud to be working with Power for All to find their next Chief Executive Officer! Power for All is a global campaign that advocates for the deployment of distributed renewable energy (DRE) to end energy poverty worldwide. With nearly 2 billion people lacking access to reliable energy, Power for All catalyzes market transformation and builds the demand for DRE, driving a faster end to energy poverty across the global south. This is an exceptional opportunity for an entrepreneurial leader and change-maker who can build on Power for All’s considerable track record and take the organization to its next level of impact and influence. We’re open to candidates with skills from a range of sectors and geographic backgrounds. Given Power for All’s focus, experience in the climate change or energy sector, especially within an African context, would be a strong advantage. The location is flexible, though we expect that frequent travel will be required to help implement campaigns and spend time with team members and key external stakeholders. To apply or refer potential candidates in your network, please connect with Dina El Zahed or Nancy McKinstry or through this link https://lnkd.in/ds94-pSu Read more about Power for All's work here (www.powerforall.org)

The response to climate change can unlock opportunity for billions of people - making them safer, healthier, better nourished, empowered, and free. We must include the most vulnerable people - often women – in energy transitions that will help us transition away from fossil fuels and set a path for human progress and development. Today, women make up only 32% of the #renewableenergy workforce. A new report from The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) offers the energy sector's first pay equity analysis and identifies ways to improve women's opportunities and success within the industry.
