This week's AfricArena Nairobi Climate Tech Summit showcased the remarkable achievements of six African start-ups that emerged victorious from rigorous pitch battles. Over 20 businesses engaged in the green economy participated in the pre-summit AfricArise Founder's Bootcamp, preparing to present their innovative solutions to a panel of investors. The winning start-ups, active across clean tech, climate tech, agri-tech, and circular economy sectors, demonstrated their potential to address Africa’s pressing environmental challenges. Notable winners include MONSAPO from Tunisia, awarded Best Clean-Tech Start-Up for its use of AI in converting used cooking oil into eco-friendly cleaning products, and Rhea from Kenya, recognized as Best Climate-Tech Start-Up for its machine learning-based soil nutrient analysis. The awards also celebrated Geneplus Global Limited as Best Agri-Tech Start-Up for its agricultural biotechnology advancements, and Gjenge_Makers as Best Circular Economy Start-Up for its innovative recycling of plastic waste. Additionally, Flat6Labs Africa Seed Fund earned the Best Investor Pitch Award, and EcoLinks, a South Korean project developer focused on renewable energy, received the Most Promising Entrepreneur Award. Each winning start-up will receive $25,000 in AWS Activate credits and advance to the AfricArena Grand Summit, competing alongside other regional champions. Applying lime to soil is done to raise the pH, making acidic soils more neutral. Here are the steps to apply lime effectively: 1. #Test Soil pH: Before applying lime, it's crucial to test the soil pH using a soil testing kit or by sending a sample to a local agricultural extension service. This will determine the current pH level and how much lime is needed. 2. #Choose the Right Type of Lime: - **Calcium Carbonate (Calcitic Lime)**: This type of lime is primarily calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) and is effective in raising pH for soils that need calcium. - **Dolomitic Lime**: Contains calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate. It is used when both calcium and magnesium are needed. 3. #Calculate Application Rate: Based on the soil test results, calculate the amount of lime needed per acre or per specific area. Lime application rates are typically given in pounds per 1,000 square feet or tons per acre. 4. #Apply Lime: - Spread lime evenly over the soil surface using a spreader. For large areas, use a mechanical spreader for even distribution. - Incorporate lime into the soil if possible, especially for surface applications. This can be done through tilling, plowing, or harrowing. 5. #Timing: Lime can be applied any time of the year, but it's most effective when incorporated into the soil before planting. This allows time for the lime to react and adjust soil pH. 6. #Monitor pH: Retest the soil pH periodically to monitor the effectiveness of the lime application. Depending on soil type and conditions, lime may need to be reapplied every few years to maintain optimal pH levels. 7. #Safety Precautions: When handling lime, wear appropriate protective gear such as gloves, goggles, and a mask to avoid skin and eye irritation. Happy Friday! A question we get asked a lot at Rhea is, 'what exactly is soil health'? At Rhea, we are committed to empowering small-holder farmers to grow more sustainably and profitably. At the same time, with every interaction that we have, we promote #soilhealthmanagement and #conservationagriculture. To answer the question, "Soil health is the capacity of soil to function as a living system, with ecosystem and land use boundaries, to sustain plant and animal productivity, maintain or enhance water and air quality, and promote plant and animal health" (FAO, 2008). Below are some pictures from a recent farm visit to Murang'a to follow-up on Mr. John's avocado farm progress.
