As the world prepares for the United Nations's COP29, the conversation around just transitions is gaining momentum—but it’s not just energy that needs our focus. A just agricultural transition is equally vital for transforming global food systems and safeguarding the livelihoods of millions of smallholder farmers. These farmers are on the frontlines of climate change and urgently need support to adapt and thrive. Achieving a just transition requires a significant increase in climate finance, better incentives, and stronger regulations to empower smallholders and build resilience against extreme weather. In this article, our Director of Global Partnerships John Mundy, calls on global leaders to commit to prioritizing agriculture in climate finance at COP29. The time for action is now. Read the full article on Devex to learn how we can deliver a just agricultural transition. 👇🏿

At One Acre Fund, we believe that putting #FarmersFirst means overcoming even the toughest logistical challenges to ensure that essential resources reach the most remote communities—like Nkombo Island in Rwanda. 🇷🇼 This island community depends on farming, but years of soil erosion have led to increasingly acidic and less fertile land, drastically reducing crop yields. To address this, we provide farmers with high-quality fertilizers, seeds, lime, and expert training, working alongside the government’s efforts to restore the land through terracing and reforestation. After travelling more than 50 km by truck, crossing 1 km by boat, and being hand-delivered by local farmers, these vital inputs reached over 900 households—enabling farmers to plant on time, improve their yields, and strengthen their livelihoods. By overcoming these logistical barriers, we’re demonstrating what’s possible in agriculture, creating a sustainable impact one farmer and one community at a time. 🌱

🌾 Women Farmers: Key to Africa’s Food Security 🌍 Women produce up to 80% of sub-Saharan Africa’s food, yet they often lack equal access to resources. If women farmers had the same opportunities as men, their yields could increase by 20-30%, lifting millions out of hunger. Alphonsine's story shows the potential of women farmers across the continent. A 24-year-old farmer in Rwanda, she joined One Acre Fund and saw her harvests grow fivefold, creating surplus income to invest in a shop and secure her family’s future. 🚜 As Africa's population heads toward 2.5 billion by 2050, empowering women farmers isn’t just an option—it’s essential. By addressing the specific challenges women face in accessing land, financing, and markets, we can unlock massive productivity gains that will improve food security and foster sustainable growth. The data backs this up: Closing the gender gap in agriculture could add $1 trillion to global GDP and lift 45 million people out of hunger. 🌍📈 At One Acre Fund, we’re taking action by providing women farmers like Alphonsine with the tools and knowledge they need to thrive. But there’s still more to be done. Let’s continue working together to create inclusive, resilient food systems that ensure Africa’s agricultural future is secure. #FoodSecurity #WomenInAgriculture #Sustainability

Food is the third most basic human need after air and water—everyone deserves the right to adequate food." – FAO With #WorldFoodDay and #RuralWomensDay falling in the same week, it's clear these two issues are deeply connected. This year’s #WorldFoodDay theme, set by the FAO, highlights food as a fundamental human right. Everyone should have access to diverse, nutritious, affordable, and safe food. 🌾 The rural women farmers we support are central to achieving this. According to The World Food Programme, if women farmers had the same resources as men, we could lift up to 150 million people out of hunger and poverty. 🌟 When women’s harvests increase, household incomes rise by 20-30% (The World Bank), leading to improved nutrition, healthcare, and education for their families. This creates a ripple effect—healthier, better-educated future generations that can build pathways to prosperity. Yet, many women in Africa face significant barriers to accessing the financing and resources they need to invest in their farms, manage climate challenges, and provide for their families (FAO). It’s time to bridge that gap. Support women farmers today, and help build a food-secure future for all. 💪🏿

The FAO reports that 733 million people worldwide are facing hunger—a stark reminder of the urgent need for change. This year's #WorldFoodDay theme, "Right to food for a better life and a better future," challenges us to consider what this looks like in action. Smallholder farming holds the potential to influence positive change. Most people living on less than $1 a day are farmers, and if the 50 million farm families across Sub-Saharan Africa could boost yields on their current land, they would be key drivers of food security and economic growth in their communities. Yet, many farmers face barriers to accessing high-quality farm inputs, often planting late and seeing reduced harvests. This limits their potential and impacts their livelihoods. "One of the greatest benefits I’ve seen from One Acre Fund is access to inputs at the start of each season. It’s been life-changing—my family can plant on time and enjoy maximum harvests," shares Jackline Akinyi Okumu, a smallholder farmer from Nyanza, Kenya 🇰🇪. When farmers like Jackline are empowered with the right tools, it doesn’t just put food on the table—it unlocks opportunities and paves the way for a brighter, more secure future.

"Achieving gender equality and empowering women is not only the right thing to do—it’s essential in the fight against poverty, hunger, and malnutrition." – United Nations 🌍 Today, on #InternationalRuralWomensDay, we highlight the inspiring story of Sauda, a coffee farmer from Uganda who has increased her profits sixfold since joining our program in 2022. 🌟 Through our specialized training, farmers like Sauda have gained the skills to improve both the quality and yield of their crops—leading to better market prices and higher earnings. With her new expertise and hard work, Sauda has been able to invest in her children’s education and build a new home for her family. Beyond financial gains, she says, "I have also gained confidence and expanded my social network." Sauda’s leadership now extends beyond her farm—she's become a trusted community leader, guiding fellow farmers on the path to success. Join us in celebrating Sauda and all the women transforming their communities through agriculture! 🌱 #EmpowerHer #RuralWomenLead #WomenInAgriculture
