About us

The Office of the Auditor-General (OAG) is an independent Office established under Article 229 of the Constitution of Kenya. The Office is charged with the primary oversight role of ensuring accountability within the three arms of Government (the Legislature, the Judiciary and the Executive) as well as the Constitutional Commissions and Independent Offices and any entity that is funded from public funds. Article 229(4) specifies that within six months after the end of each financial year; the Auditor General shall audit and report in respect to that financial year on the accounts of national and county governments, accounts of all funds and authorities of the national and county governments, accounts of all courts, accounts of every commission and independent office established by this Constitution, accounts of the National Assembly, the Senate and the county assemblies, accounts of political parties funded from public funds, public debt and the accounts of any other entity that legislation requires the Auditor-General to audit.

  • OAG Senior Leadership during a Training on Audit Quality Management. The African Organization of English-speaking Supreme Audit Institutions (AFROSAI-E) supported event is aimed at enhancing the quality of audit services and reinforcing our commitment to accountability and transparency in the management of public resources. The Auditor-General FCPA Nancy Gathungu, CBS, urged the leadership to work as a team and elevate the standards of audit practices. Stakeholders, she said, rely on our reports to make informed decisions, and it is our responsibility to deliver accurate, reliable and insightful audits. Quality audit services are not just a regulatory requirement. They are essentially for fostering public confidence in Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs).

  • We believe that the accrual basis of accounting is the way to go for government if we are to improve transparency and accountability in management and use of public resources, the Auditor-General FCPA Nancy Gathungu, CBS has said. She spoke during a training for OAG staff on the transition from Cash-based Accounting to Accrual Accounting, facilitated by the Public Sector Accounting Standards Board (PSASB). The cabinet on March 7, 2024 approved the transition from Cash Accounting to Accrual Accounting for all public entities. Kenya therefore, joins Nigeria and Tanzania as countries in Africa that have fully embraced accrual accounting.

  • The Auditor General says the government can avert calamities if audit reports are implemented promptly upon release. She cited Performance Audit Reports, saying lives and a lot of resources could be saved if the reports are implemented by the respective Government Agencies. She was speaking during the opening of the Performance Audit Champions and Communications and Parliamentary Liaison Officers workshop organised in collaboration with the Swedish National Audit Office. The workshop brings together participants from Ofisi ya Taifa ya Ukaguzi Office of the Auditor General of Rwanda and Office of the Auditor General Uganda. #EnhancingAccountability

  • Join other Kenyans as they visit our stand at the Nairobi International Trade Fair to appreciate our commitment to #EnhancingAccountability in the public sector. The Trade Fair organised by the Agricultural Society of Kenya (ASK) is themed: Promoting Climate-Smart Agriculture and Trade Initiatives for Sustainable Economic Growth. The Office is mandated to audit and report on the use and management of public resources. This includes resources from public entities that deal with Agriculture and Trade. The Office also conducts Performance Audit Reports on Environmental and Climate Change. Our audits are conducted with a view of contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

  • The Auditor-General FCPA Nancy Gathungu, CBS, has underscored the importance of Audit institutions supporting each other to enhance their performance. Speaking during the International Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions' (INTOSAI) sponsored seminar on the role of partnerships in building effective institutions, the Auditor-General said there is #value in peer to peer support. Experience sharing amongst Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs), she added, builds trust and confidence amongst staff as they learn from one another. "As we support others, SAI-Kenya is also learning on what not to do and how to improve in our respective Office," the Auditor-General said. Mr. Modou Ceesay, the Auditor-General of the National Audit Office (NAO) of The Gambia commended SAI-Kenya for supporting the #Communication and #Stakeholder Engagement function in his SAI saying the engagements were quite #impactful. He explained that with a robust website, a communication policy and social media platforms, #auditreports are now easily accessible.

  • Adopt a Forest' Initiative: Our Staff participated in a tree planting exercise at Lianyungu area in Kakamega Forest. The event was organised by the Association of Women Accountants of Kenya (AWAK) in partnership with the County Government of Kakamega through the Office of the County's First Lady. The OAG staff while participating in the activity meant to restore the tropical rain forest interacted with the area MP Hon. Titus Khamala, the Controller of Budget FCPA Dr. Margaret Nyakang'o, Kakamega County's First Lady Prof. Janet Barasa and the AWAK Officials. The Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility (S&CSR) initiative is aligned to the Government plan of planting 15 billion trees by 2032 in a bid to conserve the environment, beyond the current generation.

    The Office of the Auditor-General in collaboration with the County Assemblies Forum conducted a consultative forum to hone the skills of County Assembly Oversight Committees for effectively discharge of their mandate. The Office and the County Assembly Oversight Committees work together in holding County Governments accountable over the use and management of public resources. #EnhancingAccountability
