This #WorldEnvironmentDay2024 we're excited to share the spotlight from CNN Inside Africa, featuring one of our member community conservancies, Sera. Home to 21 black rhinos and four recently translocated white rhinos, Sera Wildlife Conservancy's collaboration through our partners like EarthRanger Kenya Wildlife Service KWS The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and Connected Conservation Foundation showcases the innovative use of technology in protecting endangered animals. In northern Kenya, where 70% of rangelands suffer from degradation, we’re addressing worrying challenges through our community conservancy model including wildlife translocations to support biodiversity, use of innovative solutions like reseeding (semi-circular bunds) and the Northern Kenya Rangelands Carbon Project—the world’s largest soil carbon removal initiative. These practices are not only ensuring sufficient pasture for our wildlife and livestock but are also combating climate change. On July 16th and 17th, we had the honor of hosting the French Development Agency Agence Française de Développement delegation led by the French Ambassador to Kenya H.E. Arnaud Suquet, along with AFD Kenya Country Director Bertrand WILLOCQUET and AFD Program Officer Nyokabi Gitahi.   The delegation visited multiple sites and projects in Marsabit County all implemented with support from the AFD grant including the Laisamis sand dam in Melako Community Conservancy, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Marsabit cultural museum, Kenya Forest Service accommodation blocks, and Leyai farmlands in Songa Conservancy. They also met with the COUNTY GOVERNMENT OF MARSABIT Governor Hon. Mohamud Ali to discuss the impact of the livelihood projects implemented through NRT in the county. The French Ambassador officially launched the Cherab Community Conservancy HQs, with the Isiolo County Governor Hon. Abdi Ibrahim Hassan praising AFD and NRT for their support. AFD's investments have established 7 community conservancies in northern Kenya, revived historic elephant migratory routes, and disbursed over Ksh 15 million (€123,253) in microcredit funds to women and youth, driving economic development. 🌍🐘🌳 #TransformingLives #ConservingNature

From our hearts to yours 💞, we're thrilled to introduce you to the newest member of Sera's rhino family 🦏💚 On Saturday, the 6th of July, Arot, one of the four Southern white rhinos that were successfully translocated recently from The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy with the invaluable support from Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and Northern Rangelands Trust to Sera Community Conservancy, Samburu County 🇰🇪, gave birth to a male baby rhino at the Sera Rhino Sanctuary. Sera, NRT's member conservancy, is globally renowned as East Africa's first community-owned breeding sanctuary for the critically endangered black rhinos. This incredible sanctuary showcases the astonishing impact of the community in conservation efforts. Currently, it is proudly home to 26 rhinos, comprising 5 white rhinos and 21 black rhinos. "Finders keepers" nope, not in this case! Yesterday, in Naibunga Upper Conservancy, herders collected a huge elephant tusk from one of our dry-season grazing blocks, Nolpanga. The tusk probably broke off during a fight with another elephant. The herders transported it about 5 km to the conservancy headquarters and reported the incident to the management, who later reported it to the relevant authorities to ensure it didn't end up in the wrong hands. Herders and community members, through their collective conservation efforts, have made a significant impact. We greatly appreciate their contributions, which make our work easier in protecting both wildlife and our rangelands. Great strides! In Laikipia County, we brought together 23 female teachers across 14 of our member community conservancies through the Girls’ Mentorship Programme. These teachers mentor and empower girls facing gender inequality. To date, the program has impacted 2220 girls, providing them with tools and support to set and achieve their goals. Facilitators from the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health, and gender experts guided the participants through various topics, including adolescent health, child protection, and effective mentorship strategies. A collaborative work plan was agreed upon for the Mentorship Programme as it enters its second phase from 2024 to 2027. #ConservationInternational I #AkoFoundation

The Northern Kenya Rangelands Carbon Project launched community and stakeholder engagement in Kalama Community Conservancy. Raising awareness about carbon credits will provide income for communities in the 22 participating conservancies and incentivize them to sustain their conservation efforts. #resilience #ClimateChange
