Last Wednesday, our General Counsel, Jesse Z., spoke at a webinar organised by Global Alliance of Impact Lawyers (GAIL) Africa in partnership with Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL), Stories Evolved, and Puxley ESG. The webinar explored how African lawyers can balance business interests with the evolving regulatory demands of the Global North, the impacts of climate change and biodiversity loss and social issues in Africa. The conversation also touched on the impact that Global North regulations and policies have had on Africa and the role of lawyers in ensuring the right balance of economic and social development for the transition to cleaner energy sources. M-KOPA is proud to prioritise a sustainable approach to affordable financial services to positively impact the environment and the well-being of individuals and communities. Thanks to the GAIL Africa team for hosting an insightful conversation.

“Thanks to my smartphone, business is booming" - Regina Musyoka When entrepreneurs in Africa have access to finance and smartphones, it opens up many investment and business growth opportunities. However, only an estimated 7% of women-owned MSMEs in Kenya have formal access. Hence, in 2023, we partnered with the IFC - International Finance Corporation to expand finance and digital opportunities for more women. Today, women like Regina Musyoka and Francisca Endoli have begun to see positive results after getting a smartphone through our digital micropayment model. They are reaching new customers using social media and have seen their businesses and income levels improve. 1 in 2 of our customers use their M-KOPA smartphones for income generation, with 82% reporting income growth. This is why we pride ourselves on being an African Fintech company that has unlocked more than $1 billion in credit for over 4 million customers in Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa. Reflecting on Jesse Zigmund’s participation at Bowmans (Law Firm) Annual Law Conference recently. He joined Charles Young, Agnes Kariuki, Jacqueline Mgosh and JUANITA MRAMBA on a panel moderated by Christina Nduba-Banja to discuss how ESG is increasingly becoming a key issue for organisations and the role of the legal team in addressing it. It was a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas and insights with industry leaders in pursuit of service excellence for organisations investing and operating across Africa. Looking forward to continued collaboration and innovation in the legal space.

What an eventful and inspiring time in our mission to finance progress.  Our CEO, Jesse Moore, joined the Kenyan delegation, led by H.E President William Ruto, on a state visit and dinner with the U.S. President, Joe Biden, to mark a new era of technological cooperation. Jesse also joined Scott Nathan, CEO of U.S. International Development Finance Corporation, for the ceremonial signing of a new $51 million sustainability-linked DFC commitment.  This commitment will support our ongoing efforts to scale digital connectivity in Kenya by enhancing smartphone access and affordability. We will be able to improve the lives of millions of new customers by enabling them to connect to the internet and become active participants in the digital economy. Our local smartphone assembly factory, which creates highly skilled technical jobs for Kenyans, will also expand our capacity to achieve this ambitious target.  M-KOPA remains focused on expanding its impact and identifying opportunities to drive digital connectivity and inclusive development. This will support the government’s target of increasing smartphone adoption for 10 million Kenyans.  We are honoured to have been a part of this historic event with H.E President Ruto and his delegation, which marked the first US State Visit by an African leader in 16 years. #DigitalInclusion #Connectivity #FinancialInclusion #EconomicDevelopment
