We improve access to high-quality, affordable Early Childhood Care & Education in Kenya's low-income communities.

About us

Kidogo is a start-up social enterprise with a mission to improve access to high-quality, affordable Early Childhood Care & Education for low-income families in East Africa. Kidogo uses an innovative “Hub & Spoke” model that combines best-practice Early Childhood Hubs (owned & operated by Kidogo directly), with a social-franchising program that supports quality improvement & growth of local childcare micro-businesses run by "Mamapreneurs". Founded in 2014, Kidogo has grown to a staff of 33, serving over 1,000 families per day across 4 communities in Nairobi. Our goal is to be the largest network of high-quality, affordable childcare centres in East Africa by 2025 so that ultimately, every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Kidogo CEO, Sabrina Habib, Partners with Melinda French Gates to Advance Women’s Power Globally Kidogo is excited to announce that our CEO/Co-Founder, Sabrina Habib, was invited by Melinda French Gates to partner on a pioneering initiative from her organization, Pivotal Ventures. As part of a total $1 billion commitment to advancing women’s power globally, French Gates is pursuing new approaches to help broaden the circle of decision-makers in philanthropic grantmaking and elevate the reach of key perspectives. She invited Sabrina to be part of a diverse group of 12 global leaders from a wide range of backgrounds who will each be provided with a $20 million grantmaking fund to distribute to charitable organizations doing urgent, impactful, and innovative work to improve women's health and well-being in the U.S. and around the world. Sabrina is honored to be part of the small group of distinguished leaders and advocates tapped for this initiative, which includes the former prime minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern, the athlete and maternal-health advocate Allyson Felix, award-winning filmmaker Ava DuVernay, and an Afghan champion of girls’ education, Shabana Basij-Rasikh. The assembled group brings a wealth of experience and a shared commitment to social justice, equality, and innovative solutions for some of the world’s most pressing issues affecting women and girls and it’s significant for Sabrina to be included as a childcare social entrepreneur. Alongside her role as CEO of Kidogo, Sabrina will be taking the next six months to develop her giving strategy in consultation with others.

Kidogo, as a social enterprise that improves access to quality, affordable Early Childhood Care and Education in East Africa's low income communities, quality training for the child caregivers is top priority to us. I have been excited to be a part of the Child Caregiver Curriculum III validation that started in March 2023, a journey that was spearheaded by the NATIONAL INDUSTRIAL TRAINING AUTHORITY (NITA). As the organisation with the largest network of caregivers in the country, Kidogo brought in technical expertise based on our practical experience in guiding over 1600 caregivers. Today, July 22,2024, we met for the final validation workshop where we were asked to review for missing modules and contribute to the flow of information. This curriculum will give our caregivers National and International certification. As a way of assuring quality in our daycare facilities Kidogo also sponsored this process. Kidogo believes that Great Things Start Small and so here's to professionalizing and dignifying the childcare sector and our Mamapreneurs!🎉 Valarie Angela Akinyi The African Early Childhood Network (AfECN) Early Childhood Development Network For Kenya (ECDNeK) Collaborative Action for Childcare in Africa African Population and Health Research Center Rebecca Muiruri ChildFund Kenya House Managers Agencies Association (HMAA) - Kenya

A FAIR START IN LIFE From Nairobi’s largest slums to construction camps in Chiang Mai and Delhi, and from Central Harlem to rural South Africa, six organisations take early childhood opportunities to access quality learning very seriously. And so does Cartier Philanthropy by supporting their work. Cassandre Pignon, our Head of Programmes, explains why we find it so important to advance early childhood care and education through the Baan Dek Foundation, Harlem Children's Zone, Kidogo, Mobile Creches, SmartStart South Africa and Ubongo. In this time of stark inequality, building tech-enabled education solutions that recognize the importance of human accompaniment at the last mile is core to Acumen’s work in East Africa. So it was a privilege to share dinner with some of the best education entrepreneurs out there. Huge thanks to leaders from Zeraki, Ed Partners Africa, Kidogo, (ETC ETC) for a conversation anchored in the humanity of every child. We’ve got work to do when it comes to partnering with government, making services accessible to those with little or no internet access. And we’ve got a giant opportunity if we do more collectively, including being there to support one another.

We're thrilled to announce that Kidogo has been featured in the Van Leer Foundation's annual publication, Early Childhood Matters "The Wellbeing Issue." This publication sheds light on critical issues surrounding early childhood development, and we're honored to have our story showcased alongside other impactful initiatives. In this edition, we're proud to share the inspiring journey of Dinnah, a dedicated mother residing in one of Nairobi's urban slums. Dinnah faced immense challenges in finding suitable childcare for her twin girls while she worked tirelessly as a cleaner. Her struggles with informal daycare were heart-wrenching, with her babies suffering from neglect and poor care. But then, everything changed when Dinnah discovered a Kidogo center run by the remarkable Mamapreneur Lydia. Lydia's dedication and commitment to providing quality childcare transformed Dinnah's life. From worrying constantly about her babies' well-being to now having peace of mind knowing they're in caring hands, Dinnah's story is a testament to the profound impact of Kidogo's mission. In Dinnah's own words: "You can't compare the two centers, honestly. Lydia really takes good care of my children. I fully trust her. I don't have stress at all because I know my babies are in good hands." We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Van Leer Foundation and guest editor Tanmoy Goswami for amplifying the voices and stories of incredible women like Lydia and Dinnah. Together, we're making a tangible difference in the lives of families and children. Read the article here: https://lnkd.in/g_uWmetJ #EarlyChildhoodMatters #WomenEmpowerment
