Huge milestone: Kenya has reached a significant milestone in its journey toward sustainability with the official gazettement of the Extended Producer Responsibility (#EPR) Regulations! As the first East African country and 2nd in Africa to enact such forward-thinking legislation, Kenya is leading the charge toward a circular economy that emphasizes sustainable product design and responsible waste management across product life cycles. This groundbreaking policy will drive waste reduction, encourage innovative eco-friendly practices, and support environmental preservation nationwide. It’s a major win for producer responsibility organizations and a demonstration to Kenya's commitment to a cleaner, greener future. We’re proud to support the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry, along with NEMA, in making EPR a transformative reality that brings us closer to a sustainable future for generations to come! Embracing circularity in our daily lives isn’t just a goal—it’s becoming a necessity. At our recent conference, we were inspired by industry leaders who shared their dedication to a sustainable, circular future. Fawzan Chaudhri, Head of Manufacturing and Real Estate at NCBA Group, discussed NCBA Group’s unwavering commitment to circular practices, building a legacy that protects the environment now and for future generations. Joseph Nyongesa, CEO of the Institute of Packaging Professionals Kenya (IOPPK), urged us to live circularity as a way of life, pushing beyond concept to real action. Mihaela Balan, Regional Team Leader at EU Africa RISE (Reform for Investment and Sustainable Economies), reminded us that everyone won simply by attending and learning more about the circular economy. Thierry Sanders, founder of the KOLEKT App, celebrated the audience’s curiosity about sustainable waste management, confident that such enthusiasm points us in the right direction. And Klaus Lehn Christensen, Regional Director of Danish Industry highlighted innovative "waste-to-art" projects as proof of the value in waste, affirming that 'Taka ni Mali'—waste truly is wealth. These insights reflect Kenya’s growing commitment to circularity, igniting new possibilities for a more sustainable future. #KEPROinAction #CircularEconomy #SustainableWasteManagement

Exploring Pathways to a Circular Economy at the 2nd Annual Circular Packaging Conference. At this year’s conference, leaders from across East Africa came together to share insights, challenges, and progress in driving sustainable practices. Here are some key takeaways that highlight the strides and strategies shaping our circular future: 🔹 EAC Harmonization: Nicholaus Ambwene, (Country Coordinator at PETpro Tanzania) emphasized Kenya’s lead in policy development, enabling quicker adoption of circular practices. Tanzania is on its way, working towards similar regulatory support to facilitate its transition. 🔹 Business Predictability: Miriam Chepchumba Bomett, Ag. Head of Policy, Research, and Advocacy at Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM), underscored the need for a stable regulatory environment, essential for businesses to confidently invest in sustainable practices. 🔹 Waste Segregation: Henry Ochieng, CEO of KARA KENYA, highlighted the importance of building consumer awareness around waste segregation to boost recycling efforts and resource recovery. 🔹 Organic Waste Management: Susan Omingo, (Chairperson of the Pwani Circular Economy Association), discussed coastal efforts to manage and recycle organic waste, noting that source segregation helps preserve waste value and reduce landfill impact. 🔹 Standardization for Circularity: Albert Nyagechi of Chemical and Environmental Standards at the Kenya Bureau of Standards, explained the importance of lifecycle-focused standards that ensure products retain value, supporting circularity and sustainability. These discussions demonstrate the power of collaboration and policy alignment in paving the way for a sustainable, circular future in East Africa. #KACPC2024 #KEPROinAction #CircularEconomy #SustainableWasteManagement
