  • In a bold move towards sustainable development, the African Development Bank Group (AfDB) has launched the Desert to Power initiative, targeting the Sahel region of Africa. Spanning across 11 countries including Burkina Faso, Chad, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal,  the initiative aims to harness the region's vast solar potential. By 2030, AfDB plans to generate a staggering 10 gigawatts of solar power through this initiative. This ambitious goal is expected to provide electricity access to an estimated 250 million people, addressing significant energy poverty challenges in some of Africa's most vulnerable regions. This initiative not only promises to improve living standards but also aims to foster economic growth and enhance climate resilience across the continent. Desert to Power underscores AfDB's commitment to sustainable development and climate action, aligning with global efforts to mitigate the impacts of climate change. As Africa continues to strive for inclusive growth and energy access, initiatives like Desert to Power are crucial steps towards achieving these goals. 🌍 https://lnkd.in/dmiWSRZT #AfDB #DesertToPower #RenewableEnergy #SustainableDevelopment

🌍⚡️ The International Energy Agency (IEA)'s latest report highlights a significant surge in global electricity demand for 2024 and 2025, marking the highest growth rates since 2007. 🔥🚗This uptick is propelled by robust economic expansion, exacerbated by intense heatwaves leading to increased air-conditioning use, and fueled further by the increasing adoption of electric vehicles and heat pumps which continue to put a significant strain on electricity systems worldwide. 🌞💡Renewable energy, led by solar PV, is set to play a pivotal role in meeting the surging global electricity demand. It's projected to satisfy half of the increased demand by 2025. Renewables are expected to surpass coal in global electricity generation for the first time, reaching 35% of the total supply in this period. 🌱🤖Despite the remarkable progress in renewable energy adoption, coal-powered generation is anticipated to maintain stability, driven by high demand particularly in regions such as China and India. Additionally, the electricity demand of data centres is becoming increasingly prominent, particularly with the proliferation of artificial intelligence (AI). However, there is still increased optimism regarding global carbon emissions from the power sector, as they are projected to stabilize initially and then decline by 2025. This trend reflects ongoing efforts and advancements in energy efficiency and cleaner technologies amid a dynamic global energy landscape. 🔖 More details: https://lnkd.in/g4tcpmak #IEA #GlobalTrends #RenewableEnergy #ElectricityDemand #ClimateAction

  • In Africa, the challenge of energy disparity persists, with many countries facing inadequate infrastructure and unreliable access. Global Energy Independence Day serves as a poignant reminder that Africa has the potential to reach the goal of reliable and affordable energy access for its people. Diversifying the energy mix to include alternative sources like natural gas and solar power is key. This approach reduces dependence on a single source, enhancing energy independence and security across the continent. At JCG, we take pride in contributing to Africa's journey towards energy independence. Through partnerships with other players in the energy sector, our investmenst aim to diversify energy sources, fostering resilient economies for future generations. #GlobalEnergyIndependenceDay #EnergySecurity #AfricaEnergy

UK INFRASTRUCTURE BANK, CENTRICA & PARTNERS INVEST £300M IN HIGHVIEW POWER CLEAN ENERGY STORAGE PROGRAMME TO BOOST UK’S ENERGY SECURITY Today’s investment will enable the construction of one of the world’s largest long duration energy storage (LDES) facilities in Carrington, Manchester, using Highview Power’s proprietary LAES technology. Once complete, it will have a storage capacity of 300 MWh and an output power of 50 MW per hour for six hours. Construction will begin on the site immediately, with the facility operational in 2026, supporting over 700 jobs in construction and the supply chain. Richard Butland, Co-Founder & CEO of Highview Power: “There is no energy transition without storage. The UK’s investment in world-leading offshore wind and renewables requires a national long duration energy storage programme to capture excess wind and support the grids transformation. UKIB and Centrica and our partners have today backed our ambitious plan to bring renewable energy storage into the UK economy at scale, liberating the potential of what is both the greenest and by far the cheapest energy source for the UK economy and provide energy security. Our first project in Carrington will be the foundation for our full scale roll-out in the UK and expansion with partners to share this British technology internationally.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/eTW_sYXs #highviewpower #longdurationenergy #ldes #liquidairenergy #centrica #ukib #carrington #goldmansachs #riotinto #kirkbi #laes #netzero #energystorage
