🌊 Conserving Coastal & Marine Ecosystems for a Sustainable Future 🌊 As the 16th COP under the Convention on Biological Diversity is coming to an end, it is clear that our coastal and marine ecosystems are critical not only for preserving biodiversity but also for supporting community livelihoods. Through the BMUVI-IKI and EU-co-funded project Pwani Yetu and Transboundary conservation and sustainable management of coastal and marine biodiversity, Kenya, Tanzania, have supported the training to 43 community scouts and stakeholders across Kenya and Tanzania in sustainable practices, gender inclusion, and conservation strategies, aligning with the #COP16 goals for global biodiversity protection. One major focus of the project has been aligning Kenya’s National Biodiversity Strategies with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (#COP15), addressing cross-border conservation and enhancing marine ecosystem protection. In partnership with the Nairobi Convention and WIOMSA, we are creating a roadmap for a transboundary marine conservation area between Kenya and Tanzania, set to be recognized as an Other Effective Conservation Measure (OECM). In addition to ecosystem protection, this project emphasizes sustainable livelihoods, such as training apiculture farmers in Kwale County in honey production. With an inclusive approach, we also provide community scouts with training on human rights and gender in coastal resource management, ensuring equity in conservation efforts. Initiatives like the Blue Carbon and Fisheries study in Lamu and Kwale Counties and supporting Mikoko Pamoja’s community-led blue carbon trading, demonstrate our commitment to sustainable solutions that benefit both the environment and local economies. Together, we’re building a future where preservation and economic growth thrive side by side. 🌍💧 #SustainableDevelopment #MarineEcosystems #BiodiversityConservation #COP16 #CoastalConservation #SustainableDevelopment #MarineEcosystems #GIZAgricultureKE Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection European Union Kenya Wildlife Service KWS Service CORDIO East Africa WWF Mwambao Coastal Community Network Tanzania

🎓 Celebrating Success: Fit4Mentorship Programme Graduation Ceremony Last week, the Fit4Mentorship Programme by SPARK concluded with an inspiring graduation ceremony! Congratulations to all the female mentors and innovation support organizations (ISOs) who made this milestone possible! The Fit4Mentorship Programme was designed to address the gender imbalance in the African tech industry by strengthening the presence of female tech role models. The initiative aimed to empower these role models, enhance their mentorship capabilities, amplify their visibility, and inspire other women to explore opportunities in the technology field. Through personal stories of navigating male-dominated industries and providing hands-on guidance for female entrepreneurs on pitching their ideas and accessing funding, these role models have profoundly impacted the startups they mentored and the broader ecosystem. In collaboration with BongoHive and Zanga Africa, remarkable growth has been witnessed among these women—overcoming barriers to leadership, building successful startups, and pioneering innovations in tech. Their leadership is reshaping perceptions and contributing to a more gender-responsive tech industry. 👉 Discover more about the Fit4Mentorship Programme: https://lnkd.in/dgQBXpaY

Exciting News from Bungoma, Kenya! We are thrilled to announce the official launch of the "Reducing Post-Harvest Losses and Utilising Agricultural Residues" project, which is being implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in partnership with Saving Grains 301 GmbH. In West and East Africa, post-harvest losses (PHL) affect up to 40% of grain harvests, threatening food security. This initiative brings cutting-edge innovations to tackle these challenges: - Digitally supported business model that empowers village entrepreneurs to enter the grain trade - Profit-sharing with smallholder farmers to benefit from grain trading profits - Traceability of grain through a novel sensor technology for transparency in the supply chain . With Farm Input Promotions Africa as the current training provider, we aim to train 4,000 farmers in Western Kenya in the counties of Busia and Bungoma on post-harvest management practices by 2027. The "Reducing Post-Harvest Losses and Utilising Agricultural Residues" project is funded and commissioned by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). It is part of the Fund for the promotion of Innovation in Agriculture (i4Ag) and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and its partners Saving Grains. This is a major step towards securing food supplies, improving rural livelihoods, and minimizing food waste. If you have ideas or suggestions, get involved! Let’s work together for a more resilient agricultural future! #PostHarvestLoss #AgricultureInnovation #SavingGrains #FoodSecurity #Sustainability #GIZ #i4Ag #BMZ

🧪 Bridging the Gap: Science Meets Business at SPARK's Workshop 🚀 Earlier this month, the GIZ Kenya SPARK project we brought together brilliant researchers and innovative entrepreneurs at our #Science2Business Co-Design Workshop in #Mombasa. The goal? To explore how scientific research can be transformed into real-world solutions. 💡 Through interactive sessions and open discussions, we identified key challenges hindering research commercialization and explored potential solutions. Key Takeaways: >Collaboration is Key: Researchers and entrepreneurs need more platforms to connect and collaborate. >Navigating Challenges: IP management and scaling research can be daunting, but with the right support, it's achievable. >Gender-Inclusive Innovation: Women's perspectives are crucial in driving equitable and sustainable solutions. >Shared Passion: Everyone agreed on the immense potential of climate-tech and blue economy innovations. >Actionable Steps: We co-created frameworks to guide research commercialization, including better policies and support programmes. 👩🔬 This workshop was a huge success! A big thank you to everyone who participated. 🙌 Join us at Afrilab in Cape Town (Nov 6-8) to continue this conversation and explore more opportunities. #Science2Business #Innovation #ClimateTech #BlueEconomy #GenderEquality #SustainableDevelopment #Africa
