Girls’ access to education and leadership is often hindered by intersecting barriers and deeply ingrained gender norms. Joy Zawadi, Executive Director of Akili Dada and #DDWithMaqC's 24th guest believes in communicating stories of impact and empowering girls to understand their power and break these barriers. Some key highlights 💡 The normalization of #earlymarriages, often driven by economic reasons, places pressure on young women to prioritize marriage and motherhood over their personal aspirations and career goals. 💡 Sexual #harassment is a widespread issue in education and professional spaces, particularly targeting women, which undermines their ability to advance in their careers and contributes to a hostile environment. 💡 People living with disabilities often face #societalstigmas, and there is a need to tell their stories in empowering ways that challenge these perceptions and promote their rights. 💡 Deeply rooted gender norms and #culturalpractices reinforce stereotypes that hold women and girls back, limiting their potential and leadership opportunities in various spheres of life. 💡 The lack of positive role models and #mentorship opportunities limits young women’s ability to see themselves in leadership positions, making mentorship critical for their development. These and other such nuggets will be featured in The Lives, Times, & Chapters of Luminaries Making Good Happen in Africa, a book featuring reflections from Leaders and Practitioners in the Development and Social Impact Ecosystem launching on the 26th of Sept 2024.
