Brown Advisory was very active at #ClimateWeekNYC this year and I was proud to be a part of the buzz across the city! We hosted our strategic partner for investing in frontier markets, CrossBoundary Group, in our NYC offices for lunch and conversation about opportunities to deploy capital and drive impact globally. I had an interactive discussion with Kate Wharton, Managing Director and Head of Natural Capital at CrossBoundary Group, on her focus on building nature-based investment solutions for climate action, biodiversity and human rights. Brown Advisory has a history of guiding clients who wish to invest in alignment with their values, and we talked about the power of catalytic capital as one of the means to help investors generate impact and achieve their investment goals. We announced our partnership with iSAT Africa Ltd FZC at the event, and look forward to supplying many more digital infrastructure companies with clean, affordable, and reliable power. 

Meet Japheth Omari, Senior Technical Manager at CrossBoundary Access. Japheth oversees mini-grid project implementation, ensuring efficiency and alignment with our mission to expand access to affordable, reliable electricity. Recently, Japheth visited Nigeria 🇳🇬 to inspect our upcoming projects. Here’s what he had to say about the experience: 'In June, we tested and commissioned 5 mini-grid sites in Nigeria. It was incredibly rewarding to see the community's excitement when the lights went on. People were dancing and cheering,' Japheth shares. 'In these remote areas, first-time electricity access is a dream come true. Witnessing this impact first-hand fuels our commitment to build quality infrastructure for reliable power.’ Looking ahead, Japheth is excited about scaling our impact. Our 2024 pipeline for Nigeria includes 30 mini-grids and 90 battery rental hubs. Already, the 5 mini-grid sites and 26 battery rental hubs are ready to power thousands in nearby communities. Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) are at a critical turning point, with investment needs between US$2.1 - US$2.8 trillion by 2030 to become carbon-neutral and establish climate-resilient economies.    How can those critical funds be mobilized? Here are our key takeaways from the climate finance roundtable we convened on Tuesday in partnership with Concordia:   1. Climate and social Impact: In LATAM, successful climate initiatives must address environmental, social, and economic inequalities. Local community engagement is key for sustainable solutions. 2. Enabling financial conditions: Climate projects require special financing. Government regulatory relief is crucial, as banks control only a small portion of financing costs. 3. Private sector role: Rather than relying solely on public funds, governments should create an environment that encourages private sector climate investments. 4. Venture capital ecosystem growth: LATAM's climate VC landscape needs strengthening. Bridging university innovation to market applications is vital, with government support needed to attract Series A investors.   LATAM has a great opportunity ahead with the upcoming COP conventions that will bring investors and ecosystem players together to generate strong commitments and partnerships. Nature-based solutions could provide up to 37% of the cost-effective CO2 mitigation needed by 2030. Yet, investment lags. As #ClimateWeekNYC is underway, our focus turns to a critical challenge: catalyzing significant investment in nature-based solutions. Our Natural Capital team is particularly interested in advancing first-of-a-kind (FOAK) nature-based projects from pilot stage to scalable, market-ready initiatives.
