Hundreds of millions of African smallholder farmers (SHF) lead a perilous existence, and are extremely vulnerable to growing climate change impact. At the same time, SHF farming approaches themselves can be part of climate solutions. Recognising, improving, and monetising positive climate impact achieved through climate-smart interventions can yield carbon revenue. Pilots and modelling have shown us that carbon revenue can be catalytic in reaching SHFs – and with a strategic and proactive approach, carbon projects can recognise and reward the climate solutions African SHFs bring to the world, improving livelihoods far beyond the carbon revenue alone.

But true impact comes from empowering local stakeholders through fair and transparent Benefit-Sharing Mechanisms (BSMs) that deliver real socio-economic and environmental value.   Supported by FSD Africa, our latest report delves into the pivotal role BSMs play in ensuring Africa’s carbon projects are both effective and equitable while maintaining the high integrity necessary for sustainable success.
