Today, CIFOR-ICRAF had the pleasure of hosting a distinguished delegation from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). The delegation, led by Dr. Han Yu, Vice President of NSFC, included Dr. Zhang Yongtao, Acting Director of the Bureau of International Cooperation; Ms. Zhu Weitong, Secretary of the Party Committee Office; Dr. Li Wencong, Division Director of Asia, Africa, and International Organizations; and Ms. Zhang Yiwei, Program Officer. Our team, led by Michael Dougherty, Director of Communications, Outreach, and Engagement, welcomed the delegation and introduced them to CIFOR-ICRAF's work. Catherine Muthuri, Prasad Hendre, Salina Abraham, Xu Jianchu and Bruce Scott,  also joined the discussions. During the visit, we explored potential synergies and discussed ways to strengthen our collaboration. CIFOR-ICRAF and NSFC share a common belief in the power of science to drive positive change and the importance of putting people at the center of our work. The delegation also had the opportunity to tour our state-of-the-art laboratories, including the Geospatial Lab, Soil Spectroscopy and Living Soils Lab, and the Tree Seed Lab. These visits provided valuable insights into CIFOR-ICRAF's research and innovation. We believe that global environmental challenges can only be addressed through cooperation, and we look forward to continued collaboration with NSFC for #TreesPeoplePlanet.

Did you know? 💭 Orangutans are currently listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List. Habitat loss, hunting, and the pet trade are pushing orangutans to the brink. CIFOR-ICRAF works with local communities to find sustainable solutions to protect orangutans, including planting orangutan food trees, monitoring their habitats, and promoting eco-friendly livelihoods. As scrutiny of carbon credit schemes intensified in 2023, our experts weighed in. Backed by over a decade of expertise on REDD and related research, we addressed expanding concerns over exaggerated claims, the problem of additionality, the role of government regulation, the potential of ‘blue carbon credits’, and how new accounting methods could rebuild confidence in forest carbon markets. Learn more about our work on #REDD from Christopher Martius, CIFOR-ICRAF Team Leader, Climate Change, Energy & Low-Carbon Development #ImpactReport2023 #Trees4Resilience

Indonesia is home to the world's largest mangrove area, accounting for about one-fifth of the global total. Sumatra, the second-largest Indonesian island by mangrove coverage, hosts 892,835 hectares of these vital ecosystems. In South Sumatra, significant mangrove clusters are located in the Sungsang area. However, Sungsang's mangroves face threats primarily from agricultural expansion, a situation exacerbated by poverty among vulnerable coastal communities affected by mangrove depletion. To address these challenges, CIFOR-ICRAF, in partnership with Temasek Foundation, has launched the Sungsang Mangrove Restoration and Ecotourism (#SMART) project. This initiative aims to revitalize Sumatra's precious mangrove forests through community-led efforts. Learn how the project will empower local communities, promote sustainable practices, and protect these crucial coastal habitats. 🔗: https://lnkd.in/dddYxqde #Trees4Resilience
