The prevalence of Exploitative Child Domestic Work is alarming, and what's even more concerning is how it has become normalized. Perpetrators often justify their actions by claiming to 'rescue' children from difficult situations, bringing them into their homes to work. These incidents mostly occur within private households, making them hard to detect and report. Many people are unaware of how or where to report such cases. As Childline Kenya, we aim to raise community awareness about The National Child Helpline - 116, a 24/7 toll-free service. This helpline enables individuals to report such instances, safeguard children, and shift societal norms. #stopexploitativechilddomesticwork #childlabour #reportto116 #NIA #NOTINVISIBLEANYMORE.

Keeping Children Safe
About us
Childline Kenya is an NGO that was set up in 2004 to respond to child protection concerns in Kenya. Some of the challenges the country faced at that time, and still faces today, include: 1. Increased rate of child abuse/broken family system 2. Inadequate access to affordable and professional mental health and psychosocial support for children and their families 3. Weak coordination of response to reported cases of children in need of care and protection Childline Kenya was therefore established to create an enabling environment for children to voice their concerns, be listened to and be linked with essential services through a coordinated referral system Nationwide. It was founded, as an NGO, by Plan International, SOS Children’s Villages and the Kenya Alliance for the Advancement of Children (KAACR). The flagship programme, which it is largely known for, is therefore the National Child Helpline 116 Service. This is a telephone based service through which children can reach out to report abuse and other concerns that cause distress to them, and receive the necessary support including immediate counseling and effective referral to child protection services. Other members of the public also access the Helpline to report cases on behalf of children. This service is co-managed with the Directorate of Children Services in a fromal engagement through a Public Private Partnership model. Apart from providing the Helpline services which is an avenue for response to violence against children, Childline also implements activites to prevent child abuse from happening in the first instance. These activities include: 1. Strengthening of the Child Protection System through Capacity Building and coordination of the referral Network to support all children in need of care and protection 2. Building the capacity of people who work with and take care of children and their concerns (Children Officers, teachers, parents, the police, the judiciary, court users etc.)

We have recently completed training sessions for cyber cafe owners in various project locations(Nairobi, Kisumu and Kilifi). The reason behind this initiative is that these cafes serve as more than just gaming centers –Cyber cafes can serve as entry points to online risks for children. If trained , educated owners have the ability to recognize concerning behaviour, such as children viewing inappropriate content or engaging with strangers on the internet. The Training also equips owners to report potential instances of online child sexual abuse or grooming behaviour to the appropriate authorities. This proactive approach can prevent abuse from escalating. With knowledge of online dangers, cafe owners can introduce protective measures such as filtering software or setting time limits on unsupervised usage, fostering a secure online environment for children. #keepingchildrensafe #onlinesafetyforchildren #capacitybuilding Muluki Munga'la Christoncia Okoth

💡💡Day 2 of the editor’s training highlighted the need for reporters and editors to get psycho-social support, especially after covering traumatizing stories of children. 📺 Many editors who handle different multimedia stories in the forms of radio, TV, newspaper, and online content shared their own experiences, describing the psychological toll of documenting cases that call for immediate action yet seeing that the victims get little support. 📝This lack of action exacerbates compassion fatigue among journalists. 📌The training fostered a spirit of multisectoral collaboration, with various stakeholders pledging to address cases of online child sexual abuse as soon as they arise and immediately follow up to ensure the wellbeing of the affected children. During the month of June Childline Kenya has been actively supporting children in the areas that were affected by the April-May floods. We conducted Team Up sessions in 8 schools, 2 schools in Mathare and 6 schools in Kibra Sub county. These sessions were designed to provide: Safe space for children affected by floods to express their grief, fears, anxieties, and emotions caused by loss of loved ones, displacement and disruption in their lives. Develop healthy coping skills to handle stress, anxiety, and trauma through techniques like relaxation, creative activities, and discussions on emotional expression. Provide peer support, the sessions brought together children who were experiencing similar challenges. This reduces feelings of isolation, and allowed children to support and encourage each other. The sessions equipped them with the tools they need to heal emotionally, reconnect with their peers, and rebuild their lives. Psychosocial support will be ongoing for children who may require additional assistance across all the 8 schools.

While protests are a powerful tool for change, they could be unpredictable and chaotic. It is important to remember the most vulnerable among us :our children. #keepchildrensafe #safeprotests #sharewidely

As the internet continues to evolve, the social workforce dedicated to child protection must remain adept at identifying, preventing, and responding to online child sexual exploitation and abuse. We are currently conducting 3-day comprehensive training sessions for the Kasarani and Embakasi sub-county Children Advisory Committees. During today’s session, many participants voiced their growing concerns about the rising number of child abuse cases facilitated by digital gadgets, highlighting the gap in parental literacy needed to ensure children's online safety. In collaboration with the Directorate of Children Services, KAACR,Lifeskills Promoters (LISP) and Childline Kenya members of the CAC gained practical skills to effectively identify, prevent, respond to, and refer cases of online child abuse. Together, we are working towards harnessing community systems that will ensure a safer digital world, both online and offline, for children.
