Some great connection moments from our ongoing Africa leadership team meeting in Ethiopia. Our teams from ChildFund International, ChildFund Deutschland, and WeWorld Onlus visited five ChildFund Ethiopia's local partner organizations and supported communities in Addis Ababa. During the visit, the teams had the privilege of engaging with some of the children, youth and community members participating in our programs, and witnessing the impact of ChildFund's programs firsthand. Our Annual Africa Leadership Team meeting has kicked off today in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia! In attendance, are leaders from ChildFund International, and other ChildFund Alliance organizations - ChildFund Deutschland, Children Believe, Barnfonden, WeWorld Onlus, Educo ONG and ChildFund New Zealand. This week-long workshop focuses on amplifying our impact as we seek to expand our programs within our current countries of operation and into the Sahel region, to reach more children, youth and communities. We are honored to have our ChildFund International Chief Impact and Innovation Officer Karen Hanrahan with us, accompanied by other members of our Global Leadership Team - Meg Audette, Mario Lima and Adam Hicks. We had the pleasure of hosting the Child Protection and Advocacy Manager from ChildFund Zambia for a three-day learning exchange focused on our online safety projects. During this time, he engaged with key stakeholders who are vital in promoting both preventive and responsive measures to ensure children’s safety online and offline in the community. We also gained valuable insights into Zambia's operational landscape, discovering how we can enhance interagency coordination and child-centered responses together. We supported the Directorate of Children Services (DCS) to train 30 editors and senior reporters in Mombasa under the umbrella of the Kenya Editors' Guild on child friendly reporting, identifying, referring and reporting on online child sexual exploitation and abuse. The team highlighted the need for regulatory bodies to strengthen regulations around content distribution in the era of citizen journalism as netizens share content without backing it up with the ethics and the recommended journalistic guidelines. This training has highlighted the need for journalists to use their platforms in creating awareness on preventative and responsive mechanisms on online child sexual exploitation and abuse. Today, we had the privilege of paying a courtesy visit to the Communications Authority of Kenya. The purpose of this meeting was to strengthen our ongoing collaboration dedicated to ensuring the safety of children online. In the streets of Mombasa and Nairobi, an unlikely group of champions has emerged to champion the fight against online sexual exploitation and abuse of children. Boda boda (motorbike) riders, once accused of perpetrating violence are now at the forefront of protecting children and youth from digital harm. 💡💡Day 2 of the editor’s training highlighted the need for reporters and editors to get psycho-social support, especially after covering traumatizing stories of children. 📺 Many editors who handle different multimedia stories in the forms of radio, TV, newspaper, and online content shared their own experiences, describing the psychological toll of documenting cases that call for immediate action yet seeing that the victims get little support. 📝This lack of action exacerbates compassion fatigue among journalists. 📌The training fostered a spirit of multisectoral collaboration, with various stakeholders pledging to address cases of online child sexual abuse as soon as they arise and immediately follow up to ensure the wellbeing of the affected children. The Safer Community Linkages for Internet Child Safety (SAFE CLICs) project is supporting the Directorate of Children Services to conduct two-day training sessions for editors from the Kenya Editors' Guild (KEG) on online child safety. Officiating the ceremony was Rozalia Omungo, CEO of the guild, who emphasized the importance of media-led advocacy. Editors play a pivotal role in shaping media narratives through their agenda-setting and gatekeeping responsibilities, deciding which stories make it to publication. Recognizing their influence, it is crucial to emphasize the importance of prioritizing child protection stories. In attendance are 25 distinguished editors from various leading newsrooms in Nairobi and Kiambu counties.
