Our 2nd Edition of the book "Drug Discovery for Schizophrenia" is on its way to release published soon by The Royal Society of Chemistry. The new collection of research will enhance our understanding of pathological neural communication between the peripheral nervous system (PNS) and central nervous system (CNS) in patients with schizophrenia. I'm very thankful to all contributors to our updated Edition, including Prof. John Waddington (RCSI, Dublin, Ireland) and Dr. Xuechu Zhen (Soochow University, China), Dr. Jean-Philippe Krieger and Dr. Urs Meyer (Zurich University, Switzerland), Dr. Hai-Qian Zhoua, Dr. Qian Lib and Dr. Dong-Min Yina (Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China), Dr. Dennis Kätzel (Ulm University, Germany), Dr. Steven Clapcote (Leeds University, UK), Dr. Clement Zai with co-authors (University of Toronto, Canada; Stanley Center for Psychiatric Research at Broad Institute of MIT, Harvard, USA), Sylvia Okafor (University of Toronto, Canada), Dr. Bernard Le Foll with co-authors (University of Toronto, University Health Network, Canada), Dr. Ekaterina Merkulova (Institute of Neurosciences and Medicine, Novosibirsk, Russia). I do appreciate effective communication with Liangqi Li and Katie Morrey from the RCS to make it real. Briefly, the second edition of the book presents current evidence that views schizophrenia as a mild abnormal maldevelopment of the entire body. This includes impaired functioning of sensory systems (e.g. olfaction), changes in blood biochemistry, and autonomic nervous system (e.g. vagal body-to-brain communication). Alternative approaches to prevent and treat schizophrenia involve advanced techniques such as non-invasive brain stimulation, local administration of compounds (e.g. intranasally) targeting PNS-based cellular-molecular pathways, or development of opto- and chemo-genetics. Two chapters focus on the genetics of schizophrenia, leveraging technological advancements in high-throughput genomics and computational biology. These tools help identify novel therapeutic targets and enable the safe repurposing of existing medications. Systematically accumulating knowledge about PNS-CNS pathological mechanisms will benefit psychiatric neuroscience, offering fresh perspectives for drug discovery. Overall, the book synthesizes expert opinions from academia and clinical studies, covering progress in genetics, pharmacogenetics, molecular-cellular neuroscience, neurobiology, pharmacology and animal models. To whom is interested, just in case here is the link to the 1st Edition released in 2015: https://lnkd.in/gWM-uJjn
