📣Today, JERA has conducted the world’s first truck-to-ship bunkering of fuel ammonia, to an ammonia-fueled tugboat owned by NYK Line at the Port of Yokohama.    Utilizing ammonia as a fuel offers a substantial reduction in greenhouse gas emissions for the maritime industry. This is the first example of the use case of fuel ammonia other than thermal power generation for JERA. We will continue pioneering as the leader of multi-purpose ammonia fuel usage providing cutting-edge decarbonization solutions beyond thermal power generation. JERA Co., Inc., along with its subsidiary JERA Cross and Shizen Connect, announce together the commencement of a trial project for the supply of 24/7 carbon-free energy (“24/7 CFE”) from December 2024. JERA has also made an investment in Shizen Connect through JERA Ventures to support this initiative and strengthen the collaboration with Shizen Connect. In this trial, JERA and JERA Cross will act as aggregators of multiple power sources including renewables and batteries. We will utilize our expertise to forecast demand and power generation and produce battery charging/discharging plans based on these forecasts. Shizen Connect will control the batteries remotely, adjusting charging/discharging based on the real-time monitoring to balance supply and demand using their Virtual Power Plant platform. The plan is to complete the system integration by the end of 2024. Upon the trial conditions and workflows to be defined, the trial supply of 24/7 CFE for specific projects will start in January 2025. 💡 Naoki Tsutsumi, Executive Officer and Head of the Hydrogen & Ammonia Upstream Business Group of JERA, had the honor of delivering a keynote speech at the Indonesia International Hydrogen Summit held on June 19-20 in Jakarta. During his presentation, Mr. Tsutsumi highlighted JERA's initiatives to utilize ammonia as a fuel to decarbonize thermal power stations. He also shared insights from the power sector decarbonization roadmap study for Indonesia, conducted in collaboration with PT PLN (Persero) and also reported to Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR). Emphasizing the crucial role and potential of ammonia and hydrogen, he underlined their importance in achieving Indonesia's carbon neutrality goal by 2060. This study serves as a foundation for updating the Master Plan for Energy Transition, a program supported by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in cooperation with Indonesia's MEMR. Decarbonization is indeed a global challenge, but the path to achieving it should be tailored to the specific circumstances of each country and region. 🌿JERA is happy to share that JERA Cross, the green transformation solution provider under JERA Group, has formed strategic partnership with Flexidao, a Barcelona-based clean energy portfolio management platform. With this partnership, JERA Cross will pilot a renewable energy data management technology, based on hourly tracking, in accordance with the international standards advocated by Energy Tag*1. Flexidao provides organizations with the tools to master clean energy management, including matching and certifying renewable energy consumption with production on an hourly basis. Using Flexidao’s blockchain-based renewable energy data management technology, JERA Cross will provide its clients with real-time visibility of electricity. The month of June marks LGBTQ #PrideMonth 🏳️🌈. JERA is also committed to promoting understanding and support for the LGBTQ community through various events to foster a diverse and inclusive working culture. On June 18, we had the honor of hosting a session with Shigeyoshi Suzuki, an elementary school teacher who has publicly come out as gay, moderated by Kazuaki Yanari, CEO of OUT JAPAN.  Suzuki shared his personal journey, detailing the struggles he faced at work before coming out, the reactions of his colleagues and family, and the effective ways to support LGBTQ individuals. Suzuki highlighted that "coming out should never be something that is forced; it is a decision for the individual to make. I was able to come out because there were people in my workplace who made me feel psychologically 'safe and secure.' Now, I can fully contribute at work because I no longer have to hide being gay." Taking pride is essential, whether it’s for yourself, your family, colleagues, friends, or as an ally for the community. 📢 Event Highlight: Future Energy Asia As discussions around hydrogen and ammonia heat up, what are the opportunities for project development and how can we scale up demand for low carbon fuels in emerging markets across Asia? Mr. TOSHIRO KUDAMA, Vice Chairman of JERA Asia, recently participated in the "Leadership Panel: Unlocking the Offtakers and Scaling Demand" at Future Energy Asia Exhibition & Summit in Bangkok, Thailand. Exploring this topic with fellow panellists, Mr. Kudama highlighted the importance of low carbon fuels towards achieving decarbonization and tackling the energy trilemma.
