Ireland Japan Chamber of Commerce (IJCC) - foremost business network for Irish and Japanese companies & professionals

The IJCC works to promote the interests of Irish business in Japan and Japanese business in Ireland and to encourage the development of commerce between the two countries. The Chamber is a stakeholder in the European Business Council in Japan, the trade policy arm of the European Chambers and business organisations in Japan.     The summer is in full force here in Tokyo! 🏖 One of our warm weather highlights so far was the Summer Cocktail event earlier this month. Hosted by the (SpCCJ) Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Japan at the Hilton Tokyo, the spirit of Ibiza was brought to life in the centre of Tokyo.     The IJCC, represented by Dublin-based Director Dominic Keogh, was delighted to support the opening of KWAIDAN; Encounters with Lafcadio Hearn at the The Hyde Bridge Gallery in The Yeats Society building in Sligo, coinciding with the 2024 Yeats International Summer School. Special thanks to H.E. Mr. Norio Maruyama, Ambassador of Japan to Ireland, for opening the exhibition and for the support of the The Mayor of Sligo, Tom MacSharry, and Councillor Edel McSharry.     On 11th July, the Ireland Japan Chamber of Commerce was delighted to cohost the 2024 Summer Cocktail event. A warm congratulations to our friends from the (SpCCJ) Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Japan who organised a fantastic sold-out event in the stunning backdrop of the rooftop bar of the Hilton Tokyo. The event was held in collaboration with 13 other Japan-based Chambers of Commerce. Guests enjoyed an incredible array of food and drink from Spain in a delightful Ibiza-inspired atmosphere. Among the drink sponsors was The Buskers Royal Oak Distillery Irish whiskey, and guests enjoyed Buskers high balls whilst networking and meeting old and new friends.     On 9th July, the Ireland Japan Chamber of Commerce and Nikkei ScoutAsia, the Chamber’s official Knowledge and Information Partner, cohosted a Briefing and Networking event. Held at the Nikkei headquarters in Otemachi, we were delighted to welcome IJCC members, friends and the wider business community in Tokyo to our second collaboration event with Nikkei ScoutAsia. The briefing session was led by Nikkei Asia Desk Editor Yuichi Nitta on "Japan's Tourism Industry: Change in the Last 10 Years and What’s Beyond". Nitta-san shared an insightful report on the changing landscape of tourism and its economic impacts in Japan over the years. Thank you Nitta-san for a fantastic briefing on this exciting topic that is at the forefront of current news trends. We were also privileged to have Catherine O’Donovan, Deputy Head of Mission, attend the event as a representative of the Embassy of Ireland. Following the briefing, guests networked and exchanged business cards over some light refreshments. We are grateful for all the support from our members and friends of the business community who helped make the event a great success by sharing, promoting and attending the event.     A special thank you to the Embassy of Japan in Ireland for allowing us the opportunity to speak with the new cohort of Irish JETs at the 2024 JET Programme Pre-Departure Orientation and Farewell Reception held on 6th July. We were delighted to connect with everyone and we look forward to welcoming 45 new Irish JETs to Tokyo very soon. Thanks to JET alumni and former IJCC Director John B. for representing the Chamber at the orientation held at Ambassador Maruyama’s official residence in Dublin. No doubt there is a lot of anticipation before the JETs arrival in Japan! The IJCC has a resource page (https://ijcc.jp/jet) written by current and former Irish JETs which contains helpful advice when starting out on the JET Programme.     🔷 Upcoming IJCC Event - Speaker Profile🔷 We are delighted to have Yuichi Nitta, Editor for Nikkei Asia as the speaker for our upcoming collaboration event on 9th July with Nikkei ScoutAsia. Yuichi Nitta is the desk editor for Nikkei Asia, covering news mainly related to Japan. Prior to that, he had been Nikkei's correspondent in Yangon, Myanmar from 2017 to 2023, covering politics, economics, and business amid the country's development amid democratization and economic liberalization, as well as the turmoil under the military regime that subsequently took over power in 2021. Nitta joined Nikkei in 2006 and has experience reporting business news in various sectors, such as medical equipment and semiconductor manufacturing equipment.     Congratulations to Kaori Iwaoka for graduating with a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from Trinity College, Dublin. She received her certificate last week at a Commencement Ceremony (graduation) from the Chancellor of Trinity College and former President of Ireland, Mary McAleese.   IJCC Director Dominic Keogh was delighted to be present at the ceremony. The IJCC was pleased to support Kaori whilst attending Trinity College and we wish her every success as she embarks on her new career. Good luck Kaori! 🎓 🎉
