It was a pleasure hosting students from the Colorado School of Mines for a preliminary design review of their capstone projects! Two teams, collectively known as the “Debris Diggers,” presented two compelling concepts: 1. The first was designed to capture three different types of orbital debris. 2. The second was created to stop debris from tumbling in orbit before being captured. In both concepts, students demonstrated how their solutions would handle U.S.-owned debris that is no longer functional and in low Earth orbit. Safely detumbling and capturing debris are two critical components of any active debris removal mission. When it comes to space-based capabilities, how does the U.S. stack up against global adversaries? In a Zero Gravity Summit panel titled “The Space Race: Winning Up There,” Astroscale U.S. President Ron Lopez joined leaders from the aerospace, government and commercial sectors to discuss the ways industry can promote American leadership and support national security in space. In the GEO world, large software defined digital satellites seem to have been establishing its base, but large, long-life satellites are not always the customers’ choices. Small GEO satellite suppliers seem to be creating their room to be.
