Hello! This is very early but I wanted to start getting the word around (and give myself an excuse not to back out), but on April 1st submissions will open for my game jam, Me, Myself, And My RPG.
This game jam will be dedicated exclusively towards the creation of Single Player tabletop and larp experiences.

The guidelines, which you can also find in the link below are:

  • The game must be an analogue rpg (tabletop, larp).
  • The game MUST be playable with only one player. The PRIMARY EXPERIENCE of your game must be single player. Do not make a normal game and scramble for 1-player compatibility.
  • If the game is still playable by more than one player, that's fine! As long as it doesn't diminish the single player experience.
  • No games that encourage hatred or discrimination of marginalized group (No Homophobia, Sexism, Racism, Ableism, etc). #UseSomeCommonGoddamnSense.  NOTE: Games that respectfully explore or tackle these themes are exceptions.

As the jam doesn't open for about two weeks, I'm happy to take any suggestions or questions people might have.

When you say single player, does that include the GM?

Single player games are games like Takuma Okada's Alone Among The Stars, Alone In The Ancient City, or We Made Them Look Like Us. They're games meant to be played by one player, on their own.

Yes, Natalie is right on the money here!

Joined! I'm working on a single player game right now, but looking forward to starting fresh on a new one.

Also, picked up Alone Among The Stars last night, played a few times. Love the concept, might use it to sculpt the loose narrative behind individual tracks in a music project I'm working on called Starship Narrator. Perfect fit!

Point of clarification: when you say, for example, no homophobia, I interpret it as there can be games which explore the topic of homophobia as an experienced phenomenon but not games which promote actual acts of homophobia (either directly or for "irony"). Am I interpreting this correctly?

Yes! Part of that point is "NOTE: Games that respectfully explore or tackle these themes are exceptions.", so that interpretation is correct.

Ha! I am bad at reading. Thanks for your patience!

No problem at all!

Is it ok if I copy the text format of your jam listing for my own?

( 2)

You can absolutely the rip the format, I based it a lot on the Emotional Mech Jam and RPGDF's game jam formats!

Very hyped for this. I'm hoping to get to my next milestone in my primary RPG project at the end of the month, so this will be a nice respite. I recently picked up plot ARMOR and I'm really excited to explore single player journal type games.

( 1)

How did you like plot ARMOR? I'm turning my first playthrough into a short story as my review for it :-)

( 1)

I have yet to finish my first play through but I'm thoroughly enjoying it. I'm not enough of an anime fan to get all the references and tropes, but it nevertheless give great prompts, twists, and opportunities to push your protagonist's narrative interesting ways. It gives you a lot of freedom with few moving parts, and constrains you just enough so you're never left with a bank slate wondering what to do next. I think it pretty much sold me on solo journal RPGs and I'm looking forward to playing more.

( 1)

Super into this idea, looking forward to contributing!

( 2)

How many games can one submit? The majority of my games are for solo players!

( 2)

I don't even think it's possible to impose a limit, so go wild!

We held one of these in 2011 under the name “RPG Solitaire.” Can recommend! http://rpgsolitairechallenge.blogspot.com/p/awards.html?m=1

( 2)

I'm so excited to see what people submit!!! I'm really into Solo RPGs and had no idea there was a place for them on itch.io!!!!!

Hi. I'm a first-time game designer and I just started working on a single-player RPG tentatively called "Pet Your Cat." I really want to participate in this, but am I breaking the rules by working on it before the jam officially opens?

( 1)

Friend, rules are a construct! You're not breaking anything, if you wanna make a hundred games before and submit them day one I wouldn't fight.

( 1)

Oh jeez oh fuck I said I would do this

I think I actually have my submission figured out mechanically I just need to finagle with formatting and such

( 1)

The jam doesn't officially open for 5 more days and submissions will be open until April 20th! You've got plenty of time, no worries.

( 1)

I starts tomorrow, right? I already have some ideas!

Yep! Starts up tomorrow!

1 is acceptable, correct? I like to include scalability.

1 is acceptable as long as it doesn't detract from the experience if someone were to play it alone.

( 2)

Then this is the jam for me.... forever... alone...

cuz gaming groups are hard to find in my area :D

( 1)

Really excited to try this! I've never made a game focused on the single player experience before

Unfortunately, an unexpected family situation has come up and I'm going to have to withdraw, despite having made some good framework I won't be able to finish in 10 hours :( Good luck and good writing to all the remaining participants!

I will say that I will be accepting late submissions so don't worry if you can't get things together by the hard deadline! But if you can't get it done regardless, no worries, handle the important issues you gotta deal with.

I have half a ruleset written up, but I've been too busy for most of the jam to complete it. :( Are you still accepting entries?

I am still accepting entries, just follow the links and DM me on twitter and I'll get a submission URL cooked up for anyone with late entries as soon as I can.
