Cool Idea! Perfect and creative name I am jealous haha. Really cool start menu, immediately engaging and fit in well with the game. I liked the more you fail the more you can see the map, really good implementation of the theme! It was sometimes hard for me to see the spikes, I think it would be cool if they were a slightly different color than the map. I would lag a good amount when I died a lot, and it was a  little frustrating to restart and undo my progress, but it looks like you already know about this. Overall cool game good job! I like the man blob character with slightly offset eyes haha. Finally great job on the music fit the game well!

Good Game ,, i like it

Great game! Like you mentioned, our games really were quite similar! The music was great and the simplicity of the art complimented the gameplay really well. The movement felt responsive, and there wasn't anything that felt unfair. I felt like the character was a tiiiiny bit heavy, but that's honestly probably just my personal preference.

As for gameplay improvements,  I think there are some minor details that could be altered/added to make the experience even more fun. I felt like the radius of the sprite mask could be a bit bigger just so it's a little more forgiving. Another thing is the death feedback. I felt like the sound effect for the death was a bit harsh to the ears, especially when coupled with the music, so I'd suggest adding something a little softer both in volume and intensity. You could make up for the indication that the player died with particle effects or a screen shake. The final thing is that I'd suggest making moving platforms automatically move you horizontally. To me, it seemed intuitive for it to move for me so I ended up dying twice because I wasn't expecting it to move without me (The first time was because I didn't know, and the second time was probably me being an idiot and forgetting).

Regardless, these suggestions are pretty minor and the game is plenty fun already. Great job!

Developer

Thanks for all the suggestions!! I agree that the player should move with the platforms, and I'll definitely try to add that in the post-jam update.

Amazing game, loved the game's core game mechanic and it fits the theme very well. The music was great and I really enjoyed the game over all.

Good job!

Wonderful submission. The idea itself is very clever and fits the topic extremelly well. Visuals were very nice and atmospheric and the sound design and music was amazing and definitelly the best I've stumbled across so far.

The only (unfortunatelly major) problem is the gradually increasing lag (which I believe you're aware of). Having to reset the levels frequently was very discouraging, but despite that the game was still engaging enough that I managed to finish it.

Overall, this is one of the best submissions I've played on this jam. The idea is very clever, the mood is built wonderfully and the execution is almost flawless. Really great job! :)

Developer

Thanks so much for your positive review! I'm very sorry to hear that the lag discouraged you, but I still hope you had a fun experience.

It's a really nice game although for some reason it gets a bit laggy after i uncover alot of the area, no idea why, but i really liked the concept and the execution, great job!

Developer

That's a problem that I noticed from the beginning of development and that several people have already pointed out. It's caused by the way the player reveals the level--through sprite masks. Eventually, there are too many of them, causing the lag. I'm not sure if everyone reads the description, but I put a temporary fix by pressing R, and I'm currently working on a solution that removes the lag entirely. Thank you for playing!

That was relaxing background music :)!

Nice little game. Good idea to discover more of the levels when you are playing and when you die you know some more.

The spikes were maybe a bit tiny to see were not to jump. It sometimes took me a while to know were they were precisly.

But it was fun to play and nice art style also.

Job well done!

Thanks for the review! It's true; the spikes are sometimes hard to see.

Hey! Great game. I really mean it. It was a fun little adventure. I like the visuals, obviously reminds me of Baba is you, which is a good thing! BTW, the level with an arrow is awesome) It was a bit hard to solve at first, but then I had 'a-ha' moment, when I tried to go in completely different direction :D

Developer

That's exactly how I wanted players to feel on that level! Thanks!

First of all, kudos on the main menu. I thought the "flashlight effect" was really clever and creative, I enjoyed that. Speaking of creative, I love the entire game concept. Slowly revealing the map by blindly moving in a direction makes for some interesting levels you could build in the future if you wanted to keep working on this. It's so satisfying when you beat the level and it reveals the whole scene. Fantastic job! :)

Developer( 1)

Thanks! The concept for the title screen was not entirely my idea; it actually came from a playtester who thought, as a joke, of having to reveal the title screen as the player does. But I took it seriously and adapted it into that effect, and I'm pretty proud of it. When thinking about how to do the transition between levels, I thought it would be cool to show the player the whole level, to demonstrate how they were able to navigate through the entire thing merely by wandering around and dying sometimes. I'm glad that made you feel satisfied! As for working further on the game, I think I'm just going to make a few changes and leave it at that. I think this game is left best to be simple as it is, and besides, I already have a long-term game I'm working on that's an extension of a jam game I made in January. But who knows; we'll see.

This game reminds me of another game ;)

I liked this game, played it through to completion. the level with the arrow was hilarious.

at first i was annoyed by not being able to avoid deaths, but then i embraced it and had a good time

Developer( 1)

Thank you!

While I was designing the levels, I thought about how other players would have no idea what each level would bring, but I knew exactly was behind the darkness in every level. Then when I came to level 7, I thought... what if the player thought they were playing a normal level... when they'd later realize that the actual level was hidden beneath them all along? So yeah, it's great that that feeling came across for you!

As for embracing the deaths, that's something I had in mind as I developed this game. Players would originally fear taking unpleasant risks, but as the levels went on, they would learn to not have to be afraid of the dark, as it's how they learn from their mistakes.

Submitted

i noticed early on that even by creeping forward i couldn't stop on time to avoid spikes because of the momentum on the movement, so i started going hog wild, if that was intentional then you're a genius

Really awesome fun game, ofcourse the lag is the problem, maybe spawning masks  everywhere the player goes might not be the best way of doing it, but regardless it is still amazing! Also, a sweet ending :)

Developer( 1)

Yeah, it wasn't the best way, and I'm definitely fixing it later. But it's a game jam, and sometimes you just have to rush the mechanics in. I'm glad you liked the ending; I put a good degree of effort into it and it makes me happy to see that it paid off. Thanks for playing!

Submitted

Yeah, definitely, its an awesome game and you should definitely continue with it :)

The music fit well with the feel of the game and the art was very cute. I love the mechanic because it's fun to play and unique from other games. Great game!

I really liked it! the art was good the mechanic was cool and a super uniqe interpritation of the theme!

Developer

Thanks! I'll check out your game too.

thanks :)

I think this was really well executed! The visual style was cute and the idea of "losing just tells you move about the level" is a good way of interpreting the level.

One thing I will note is that I got stuck on a level for  a bit, and it seemed to grow laggier and laggier until I beat the level, where it instantly fixed all the lag. You might have some data leak or a loop that's acting up.

Submitted

Very charming!!! Loved the ending too. Just a note: it seems like the more of the screen I uncover, the fewer fps I get. Maybe look at how to optimise it a bit. Otherwise, this is an excellent entry.

Developer( 1)

Thank you for playing! I'm very happy you found this game charming.

The lower fps is indeed a problem. It happens because the player spawns masks whenever you move, and eventually there are too many masks on screen. I couldn't figure out a nice solution in time, so I made it so if you press R, it deletes half the masks. It's not a perfect fix, obviously. Someone did give me a suggestion on Vimlark's stream yesterday to use render textures for the masks to reduce lag. I'll look into that, and I'll update the game with that fix after the rating period ends.

Submitted

Ah, the lag makes sense then. It's a super cool mechanic regardless, and works well with the art style!

Submitted( 1)

Loved it!

I love it, such a good concept. Meets the topic perfectly. I think it would be nice if the character moved with the platforms when you jump on them. :)

A lovely mechanic, but for me it got tedious quite quickly. Not sure how I'd change it to stop that, though! Nice visuals and music, although I agree with pineth that the music and sound effects/visuals felt a little disconnected.

The concept of this game is really cool, and fits the theme perfectly. The music was good, however I think that it doesn't match up that well with the 8-bit sound effects; the same thing for the visuals. The background and character are pixel art and the terrain and the darkness are high res and have smooth curves. I think it would look better if it was all in one style. Other than that, I liked this game a lot!

Developer

Thanks for your feedback! I agree with your criticisms regarding the art. I used Unity's Sprite Shape tool to make the varied terrain, which would be difficult to translate into pixel art, but it would look a lot better that way. On the other hand, I was able to make, and should have made, the sprite masks pixelated. There wasn't anything stopping me from doing that; I was just lazy and I kept the default shape.

I like how it fits the theme, pretty creative!
