Very well done! Impressive considering it's your first Jam game. Really liked your take on the idea and the attention to detail.

If I may offer one piece of advice, I think some post processing effects would help making it look more professional, something like vignette and/or bloom.

Developer

Thank you for playing! I will definitely look into some post-processing effects for next time!

Not sure how to win(I get swarmed by archers and can't  walk fast enough left and right). Cute take on the theme. Really like the attention to detail(monster breathing, villager voice lines etc.). It's a good game!

Developer

Thank you for the nice comment!

I definitely can improve the clarity of the objective. It is essentially timer based, so adding a timer would have helped! Not to mention I broke the balance before submission, making it impossible to survive the archers xD

Excellent work on your first game jam! I loved crushing those tiny guys (how many of them live in one house?!). To me, it didn't make much sense that the "rage" level went down when I got shot - that should make me more enraged! That said, it was a nice measure of how well I was doing. The SFX were great, and overall, this is a pretty good game. Well done!

Developer (1 edit) ( 1)

Thank you! I had been waiting for someone to question how big those houses were :p The little'uns are known for their large families ;)

I had the same worry about how intuitive the "rage" mechanic was, and I actually had the same thought as you! I was also worried about making it too complicated, as it was really just an analogy for "health" as you inferred. I'm glad you brought it up. It's valuable to know what players are thinking.

Thank you for playing, and thank you for the nice feedback!

This was a fun little game. The sound effects really made me giggle ("Saaave the children"), I saw on the game page that you talked about implementing a jump, so here is my idea: A ground stomp would be epic for this! Also think about camera shake for each step to give the monster more weight.

By the way when dying after a restart the character is still controllable after being pacified. It's not major bug, but just wanted to let you know :) Well done though!

Developer

You read my mind! I definitely envisioned a ground stomp when the player landed from a jump. I think it would be really funny to see all the little'uns fly up in the air.

I added a slight camera shake to the ground (only), but I think it was too minimal and easily missed. I've been bug fixing since submission, and continued tweaking things like the shake (and the game balance). I've also fixed the bug with the player still being controllable. Thank you for the notes!!

Submitted

Just played it again in full screen mode, and the shake there is actually fine (but the HUD elements don't scale). Maybe have to figure out a way to have the shake based on window size?

If you have the time, I'd appreciate if you could also check out my entry. It's only my third game so feedback is more than welcome.

Developer

You found the fullscreen bug XD I didn't even try until after I had submitted. Oh well, I've got plenty to learn!

I gave yours a spin--see comments there. Great job!! For your third game, I'm really impressed. Please keep at it!

Man, not only has Meatwad been at the gym, but he got some serious roid rage as well.  Fortunately the peaceful villagers of New Jersey were able to calm him down.     (Seriously, this was very entertaining and I loved the sounds and use of the sprites...great work!)  :D

Developer( 1)

Meatwad XD now there's an excellent reference. Bahaha!

I'm glad you enjoyed the sounds. I may have had more fun recording them, though >:) Thank you for the kind words!

Submitted

I too was pacified. Pretty cool how later on the villagers sent out archers. I think being able to destroy buildings would add a lot of depth. Since, the villagers then have to choose between rebuilding and attack the player.

Developer

Hey that's a cool idea. If the villagers could rebuild while you are attacking, it would definitely draw out the challenge! Neat idea. Thank you for playing!

Very satisfying game to play :-)

A great little foundation for a game - you nailed the feel of being powerful and smashing stuff! Could see this being expanded into something special - a lot of great games started with a Jam entry after all! Good job!

Submitted( 2)

Congrats on your first game jam entry! If your aim was to make me feel like a monster you have succeeded! I felt super strong and i could really feel the power crushing all the poor villagers. I loved how their little archers came out to try and defend the village, they actually succeeded and managed to pacify me. I wonder if they're used to a world with these huge monsters in it and they've learned how to survive. And how could I forget the sound effects!

I think it would have been awesome if I could have crushed the buildings too, and just smashed up anything I stepped on. A score or some idea of how well I fared would be a nice touch too, so I could try to improve. Overall though, well done, I hope you keep jamming!

Developer( 1)

Thank you for playing! I think a score, like the number of villagers crushed, would be a great idea!

I want to continue making the monster feel more powerful with different effects. I will think about crushing buildings, maybe it could be like a side scrolling kind of game!

Submitted( 1)

Neat core loop, would be nice to have some abilities and stuff added onto this in the future.

Developer( 1)

I agree! I had really wanted to add a jump and slam that would be available when you had enough rage, but it quickly became clear to me that I wouldn't have time to do the animation and coding for that, so I focused on what I could do to make the game loop feel finished.

We are on the same page, though! I'm excited to add to this.

I have had so much fun on this title. It is this mechanic which made it so satisfying to play. Congrats on having such idea. It is just perfect utilisation of the given artset. I've been watching those sprites and was thinking "who the f would use this laying creature sprite" - and there we go!

I have noticed that clouds are distributed on layers in a way which creates an illusion of a 3D world. Perfect job.

Basically the game idea is simple and controls are easy which combined let user get the whole mechanic in like 10 seconds. It is really cool as some games really lack this feature and even after few minutes spent I am still not entirely sure what to do.

Developer

Thank you for your comments! I definitely saw that sprite and thought "this is perfect." I'm glad you appreciated the simplicity of it. I think I ended up wanting to make just a neat, compact experience.

Also, I recommend you check out "Dog Galore" if you want to see how someone else used that laying creature sprite XD

Was a lot of fun but i was playing with the sound off at first, when i unmuted it the ridiculous sounds design made it a whole lot more fun! Would be nice to see where you take this, i ran out of time for things like a high score etc in my entry so i sympathise. Destructible buildings would be fun

Developer( 1)

I'm glad you thought to turn the sound on! I would have liked to add settings like volume control, among other things, but ran out of time like you said.  I wanted to at least make something that felt "complete." I guess that's how these things go !

Submitted

It's always super satisfying to feel super powerful, and this game definitely delivers on that fantasy. The fact that the scaled up sprite for the monster is so rough and jagged lends a strong contrast to the shrunk down elements - you did a great job delivering on the feeling of being a giant, scary, powerful monster.

Great work!

Developer( 1)

I'm glad to hear you like the effect! The idea of scaling the sprites was pretty much my lightbulb idea, and why I decided on a whim to do the jam. I'm happy that it all integrated well into a pleasing composition.

Submitted

I can see this being polished and expanded into a great over the top silly asymmetric combat game. The sound effects were fun, especially the monty python-esque cheering when the villagers win.

Developer

definitely! With a progressive level through a larger village. It might take some thought to rework or maintain the landscape of it, or it might become a completely new game!

Cool thoughts, thanks!

Love the level that the monster gets to stop around in, very creative use of the art assets, especially the mountain. It's a fun concept and the game feels polished. Of course the sound effects are a nice touch too :)

Developer

Thank you! I'm very happy with the scene composition, too. I wish I had time to balance the sound more, because I was worried it sounded too mushed together.

Submitted( 1)

Very simple game but fun stuff ahah.

Love the sound effects that sound like gnomes

Great work!

Submitted( 1)

The mountains and clouds were gorgeous.

Submitted( 1)

This is a fun game. Especial the sound design is awesome.

Developer

Thank you, I had probably too much fun recording those!

Submitted

Did it make you rage to see everyone using those Pikachus so much?

Developer( 1)

Haha! I just saw them and thought, they look very smoosh-able.

Submitted( 1)

For a first jam, you can be proud of you, you did a great job!

Indeed, your game is simple and fun, the perfect mix!

Moreover, it is refreshing to play the bad guy :D

So keep it up! GG for your work!

Developer( 1)

Thank you! It was definitely too satisfying to squash the tiny folk >:)
