Use of the limitation
The more ahead your score, the more fireballs will be in play - Choose between playing with the computer to keep the scores close and slowly increasing, or take a risk and pull ahead for the chance of scoring with multiple balls at a time! (also warmth, because they're fireballs getting warmer with every bounce!)

Cookies eaten
None. But I did eat a pack of brownies, so don't feel that bad for me :P

Great game! I love how quickly it gets chaotic

Developer

Thanks very much :D

nice, another quick PICO-8 entry! if only we had atari-style paddle controllers for zoomy ball-bouncing… it could grow even more chaotic with that level of control!

Developer( 1)

Hah- thanks :D I’m not sure I’m allowed to insist people use atari-style paddles, but if I could…

Very impressive considering you only spent a few hours on it! It's a clever spin on an old classic. My only suggestion is to make the fireballs either more random in direction or give the player control over them based on their paddle velocity - at some point I was just stuck in a stalemate with the AI because the only balls on the screen had almost 0 y velocity so neither paddle had to move to do anything.

Developer

Thanks - I’m glad you liked it!

And yeah- not being able to influence the ball (beyond hitting it!) is a real limitation!

Interesting premise, enjoyed the game. I think I wish my paddle was a bit faster, because it would allow me to catch balls for a little longer (since at a certain point, fireballs will spawn where you aren't physically capable to catch all of them, causing you to lose).

Developer

Thanks - yeah, it could definitely have done with a bit more tuning.

great game! The mechanics is straightforward and the difficulty increases as the balls increase in speed and number, the art is simple which gives emphasis on the skill and difficulty,  keep it up!

Thanks - glad you liked it!

This is a pretty cool game, the multiplying balls is a neat mechanic.

Developer

Thanks :D

Thanks :) I do love pico-8 was getting a game together quick.

Wow this got hard quick. The chaos was pretty fun, though. Nice job!

Thanks - yeah - things escalate pretty quickly - probably should have tuned that a bit more!

First of all: I love the concept. It was really interesting to find such a new approach to Pong! Old classics never die.

If you allow me, I would review the mechanics in a little detail:

The AI is quite strong in the early game. It took me a loooong time to take the first score. Also with two balls there were a lot of shootbacks until I finally made it to the third ball. With the third ball on board, the game get's hot instantly. Now it begins challenging the player, what I really like.

A major improvement would either be:

Speed up the final heat balls (yellow ones) ; Random Up the strength of the AI (reaction time determined by a little random value) ; differentiate the collider sections of the paddle to make variations of shootbacks possible (shoot back in different angles)

But all in all I really enjoyed the game and the concept so far. Great Job! Super inspiring.

Cheers! I’m glad you liked it!

Some good suggestions - I know what you mean about the AI / ball angles. Both those implementations were super-simple, which doesn’t lead to much variation.

Started slow, but moved into the action pretty quickly. I loved the interface; It made me feel like I was holding an old GameBoy! Good job!

Developer

Thanks! I was definitely surprised how quickly things escalated in practice once I’d implemented the mechanic!

Lacked on inspiration and style, though i still had alot of fun playing, wish you could control the direction of the balls by the position of your paddle. Overall it was a fun 5 mins, great work!

Developer

Hah- thanks! It was definitely one of my quicker turn-arounds.
