Welcome to the Jam!
You may be asking yourself, "if it's an hour long jam, why is the runtime 8 days?" Here is what we want to achieve with this special jam:
- Challenge participants to make a game in 1 hour
- Allow flexible scheduling to avoid crunch/sleep deprivation
- Sharpen our skills in prototyping, scoping, and completing projects
- Have fun!
So, how exactly does this work? Well, like many facets of game jams, there is a bit of an honor system at play here. Realistically, there is no way for us to enforce that submissions are entirely made within 1 hour. That, in addition to wanting to keep this casual and a fun exercise in practical game development skills, is why there will be no theme, no voting categories, no winners, and no prizes. Let's all do our best to crank out what we can in an hour, become better developers, and have a good time with our fellow indie devs! With that said, please read the rules below and feel free to ask any remaining questions you have in the #1hour-jam-2024 channel in the Frogwell Discord.
Rules
- If you have the availability, choose an hour of the day on March 2nd (Saturday) or March 3rd (Sunday) to work on your game. This is when most participants will be jamming, and I encourage you to hop into the voice channel to say hey and chat with others! If you are unable to jam on either of those days, but really want to, try in the week before submissions close on March 10th. This is the main reason why the jam runs for 8 days.
- Do your best to spend exactly 1 hour creating a game to submit - worry about web builds and Itch pages afterward. I recommend using two 30-minute timers and sketching out as much as you can ahead of your start time!
- You can spend 1 additional hour fixing bugs, creating web builds and customizing your game's page on Itch. This extra hour is not meant to be an extension of your overall development time; remember that your goal is to make a complete game in 1 hour!
- You can make more than one game in a separate hour, if you wish. For example, Game A is made from 1PM to 2PM; Game B is made from 3PM to 4PM.
- You can fly solo, or you can submit as a team. You can even join multiple teams!
- You can use any engine with any language, as long as the result is a playable executable for Windows/macOS or is playable in a web page.
- Feel free to brainstorm, sketch, or write out ideas you have before the jam starts. No asset creation intended for the jam is permitted before the start of the jam.
- Reusing assets from previous projects is permitted, but try to minimize your use of them, and state in the description of your game what was used. The challenge is centered around starting with nothing at all and making something in an hour!
- Open-source assets are permitted. Please credit the original creators in the description of your game!
- Most importantly: have fun and don't hesitate to ask your fellow jammers for help or ideas!
Thanks for jammin' - see you on the other side!
