really cute world, the subversion of expectation at the beginning was great and the world look like its well thought of but the controls lack something to really feel great to play (im thinking about a higher jump but there’s more)
i definitively want to know more about this universe, all characters, even the enemies look unique and interesting (im definitively not biased toward white monochrome pixelart, god what has undertale done to my brain)
I'm glad you enjoyed the game despite its incredible difficulty. The jump was intended to feel short and unsatisfying to allow for upgrades later in the game to provide a more significant boon. You may have noticed that the controls feel a bit drifty. The reason behind that is to make the game more bouncy and knockback more impactful, though, I definitely overdid it in some areas. Without the drifty air movement, you could just wail on most bosses without them being able to do anything, and I really dislike adding in invulnerability phases. Some of the movement options like the dash and double jump along with the melee attack could have used a bit more polish, so I'll return once the jam is over to refurbish some of the more iffy features and turn this into a full game.
i feel you, handling controls can be a cruel task, i hope you can find the right mix. tho do think about letting the player be as much in control as possible, especially movement. its the first thing you experience in a game it can definitively make or break a game, it HAS to feel good. its the other elements that have to adapt to it, not the other way around. its ok tho if the game is too easy, its a jam game, there’s a bit of “showing off your work” to it, if its too hard it basically become a player filter, and you cant really afford to filter a small playerbase :)
definitively interested by your post jam update, tho dont overscope it, a small completed project is better than an aborted big project :)
Definitely a well executed fascinating concept with great art, music and story! I found the rotation system to be a bit unruly at times: it was hard to plan where I would end up and half the time I would get thrown into enemies and die, respawning me at the beginning and leaving me a little lost about where I just went. Best time I've had being lost though! Great job!
There are fountains you can set as save points before bosses, and if you didn't know this already, despite the lack of a main menu there is a working save file system! As long as you load a save before the fall you can resume where you left off. Honestly I underestimated how easy it would be to get lost given the fairly small scope of the game, but my friends tell me its a maze, so I'll definitely add some sort of map and compass when the jam is over.
Thanks these are good tips!
Amazing concept, it feels really well to play, I get lost sometimes and get to feel like "maybe I shouldn't be going this way... or maybe I'm free to do whatever" so I was unsure about doing something I should be doing, I think isn't a big deal, I really liked it :)
Word's can't describe how impressed I am by this.
Hi, just finished checking out your game. It is a massive work for a jam game, really good work here! I love the hair's movement as it remembers me a lot of Celeste's one. As some comments pointed out, it can be a little dispersive at times, and I love metroidvanias, but having the ability to go almost anywhere (due to the gravity flip mechanic) is what made it a little bit confusing some times. Apart from that it's a really cool concept and really well executed as well. Really a cool project, you should develop it further after this jam ends.
Again, massive work, good luck with it, you deserve it! <3333
Very impressive! I love the artwork and the world. The controls feel amazing for the most part. It seems like you accelerate to the right pretty hard, and that was difficult to get used to in some of the platforming segments I encountered. But I liked it! I hope you keep working on it because I want to see this as a finished product.
I applaud you.
The platforming segment was kind of meant to encourage the player to go a different way, it feels hilariously rough because gravity is constantly swinging in that room, that's not just a visual effect! There is an inkheart at the end, so I hope that makes up for it. That section like most is completely skippable though. Instead of straight corridors, the rooms in my game go in loop de loops. Out of 16 rooms (not counting houses) you can complete the game only visiting 7 and fighting 2 out of 4 bosses.
Simply amazing. Hard to believe this was made in only 14 days. Visuals are great, gameplay is fun. Rotation mechanic felt super unique and fun to use. Very polished, I like.
It was actually made in 10 days, 'cause I joined the jam late! This game was originally going to be a much smaller 2.5D game, but I had a little too much fun with knockback and world rotation, and scope creep led to this game to being fairly large for a jam game. I'm glad you liked it!
everybody seems to love the hair and I am no exception xD the world rotation was mind blowing at first. It felt amazing to “abuse” the mechanic for the first time. I felt super clever.
Is it just me that got stuck in the first room? I tried all of the controls, tried reading all the text and nothing. The game looks great though, I love the hair physics, and the pixel art looks good.
Use "W" to enter door ways. I'm so sorry! I forgot to mention that!
Amazing! you implemented the mechanics really good, also presentation is great.
Nice game, great idea and graphics. It is a tiny detail of the overall experience, but I must say I very much like the way hair of the player character moves when jumping around. :D
It seems that it is possible to get stuck in some places, but otherwise great work. Well done!
Darn it! I was going to fix that and completely forgot! Fortunately "R" will reload your last save if you get stuck
Neat game! I like the mechanics and I think this would be a fun little adventure with some more polish! (also, how did you do the hair phys? a spring or bone?)
Behold and be Amazed! I used neither of those two things ('cause I'm an idiot) and used the most caveman solution I could think of. Every tick the character's head rapidly spawns particles that travel down at a slow yet constant rate. If the particle gets too far from the head, it gets deleted. If you spawn small particles in front of the character, and larger particles behind the character then the illusion is complete! If you want to make the illusion more convincing, you can have the game draw particles between particles so that the illusion doesn't break at high speeds. You can even add effects for wind by changing the direction the particles slowly move in.
I like the style. Hair physics look really cool :)
It is quite difficult to navigate the map as it is rather big and the spin mechanic makes it hard to memorize. I did not manage to finish the game, but maybe I will come back to it when I'll have more time.
The swaying room is nausea inducing though :D
I tried to make a map, but couldn't wrap my mind around how I'd go about doing it. Thinking back, I probably could have used a compass to help players figure out which direction they are going in. Sadly, I ran out of time making the menus and had to scrap them.
Very polished and full of story narrative. I really love the unique setting and the amount of details you were able to add during the jam. This can be a very popular game with the right direction.
Your work is very admirable: 11/10
I'm glad you enjoyed the game! It was originally going to be a lot more story rich, but tabbing through a lot of dialogue can be annoying for some. It can also be time consuming to write dialogue and I joined the jam partway through. I'd market a longer and more polished version, if I knew how. Sadly, I don't know how to get my games played by the public outside of game jams -_-
Maybe a dev log series in YT or TikTok, but I completely understand your situation, I look forward to any projects you have. I really admire the amount of work you could do, in such short time. 1 Follower
It was quite entertaining to play - but it wasn't clear where I was supposed to go in a level and what the objective was. I found myself randomly moving around the level not knowing where to go...
I found the swinging room was quite annoying, but thankfully that was quite short. I've seen the spinning level mechanic on several games already, but it was well implement - nice and polished game entry, good job!
Typically Metroidvanias are exploration based, and I know the genre isn't for everyone. I tried giving the players directions on where to go, but it ended up useless because the players would just get lost anyways with the whole spinning world thing. I made the more obvious paths you can take in the game more challenging to encourage taking other paths. The swinging room is completely skippable as are most rooms in the game. I hope you enjoyed my game!
Very well executed game:
- The style is consistent and well done
- The hair is moving and give a great feeling the the character
- The idea of rotating the wold is good and well executed
👏 congrats
Thanks! I made all the assets myself which is probably why the style looks consistent. Personally, I was worried that the world rotation idea was bad and that I should have gone with simple gravity flipping instead. I'm glad you liked the rotation mechanic!
This is a very polished game considering the time period :). I don’t normally play these sorts of games, however this one kept me hooked for a while (and I might keep playing in an attempt to finish it once I’m done looking at a few other games in the backlog). The game is very hard (which I’m not always a big fan of), but it makes getting through new sections of the game satisfying. Visuals all look incredible, and the music fits the world you’ve created. I also cannot believe how many characters you’ve managed to write up for this game, and of the one’s I’ve met they all seem unique and interesting. The core mechanic is unique, and it’s executed well; the shifts in rotation are seamless and have clearly had a lot of work put into them.
Honestly, if you told me this was a $5 game on Steam I’d probably believe you, because the attention to detail in everything I’ve seen so far through the game is incredible. You should be really happy with how this turned out, well done :).
Thanks, this post was a major confidence boost. I was feeling pretty bad that I wasn't able to implement a menu or do public testing to adjust the difficulty (also that a few minor bugs managed to find their way into my game). Hearing that my game is worth something really made my day!
super cool visuals, but also very hard i didn't get very far
Thats ok! Its really hard to make a game that has the right level of challenge for everyone, and I didn't have enough time to add in other difficulties because I started in the second half of the jam. So the game is stuck on hard mode. I hope you still liked the game regardless.
Fun story and art but why was the attack and interact J!?!!
Because when you play a game in the browser, if you press up, left and space at the same time, most spacebars don't work, so I decided to use "WASD" instead. If had used "ZX&C" arrows then I wouldn't have a jump button! In order to have the right hand use keys I typically default to "JK&L". There are many games that do this, but yeah, I probably should have had some options for right handed movement.
Cool little game, it took a while to finish it but it was fun, I had no idea what was going on but ya it was good. art style was nice and clean and the hair physics were nice.
Thanks! I'm rather proud of how the hair physics turned out. I'm happy to hear that at least one person managed to beat the game. Was originally going to be more story rich, but I had to cut some corners due to starting the jam late
It was hard but alot of fun!
