Just published: the Atlas of the Human Planet 2024. Over 100 pages of maps showing 50 years of global population growth and urbanisation trends. It shows how a healthy planet is inextricably linked to human actions and how some actions - like protecting and restoring Earth’s ecosystems - are choices that we can and must make. The global population has nearly doubled: from 4 billion people in 1975, to almost 8 billion in 2020. Understanding how cities and rural areas have evolved makes it possible to assess vulnerability to disasters, environmental pressures, and economic dynamics, helping policymakers and urban planners anticipate climate and social challenges. #Science4Policy

What is more effective: prebunking or debunking of false narratives? Turns out, both work! The dangers of #Misinformation and #Disinformation are well studied. We know that false information can delay actions, skew elections, and even endanger lives. In the latest study, our scientists analysed data from 5 228 European citizens. Now published in Nature Portfolio, the study shows that strategies like prebunking and debunking work. Yet, debunking is slightly more effective. This might be because this strategy targets specific mis/disinformation narratives with concrete evidence. Prebunking merely alerts about common false narratives. We have to keep an eye on #pollinators. These photos were taken by scientists working on the STING project (Science and Technology for Pollinating Insects), which developed a new methodology for monitoring pollinators. At the moment, we know that pollinators are declining in Europe, but we have no comprehensive studies about it. With this new methodology, EU countries can start monitoring pollinators in a standardised and reproducible way, so we can have the whole picture. Axel Hochkirch, Adara Pardo and their colleagues at STING are researchers studying pollination ecology, agri-environment issues, ecological economy, and new technologies like visual recognition and artificial intelligence applied to entomology. Over the next 2 years, they will continue refining the methodology, helping EU countries launch their national pollinator monitoring schemes. Read more about it: https://europa.eu/!94FkDH
