🛰️ Boosting Italy’s Space Industry 🇮🇹 Italy has taken a significant step forward in space regulation with the approval of its first comprehensive space law. 📜 The law comprises 31 articles and includes several key provisions. It requires private operators to obtain authorization for space activities conducted from Italian territory and Agenzia Spaziale Italiana will oversee compliance and manage a national registry of space objects. 💰 It also introduces a multi-year fund to support space economy activities and offers incentives for SMEs and startups in the aerospace sector. ARQUIMEA and Aerospacelab agree to co-develop a high-performance 𝐋𝐨𝐰 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐎𝐫𝐛𝐢𝐭 𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐞 🛰️ The new co-developed satellite will be highlighting optimised reliability and power management: ➡️ It will deliver 1.5 kW of peak power. ➡️ It will be able to integrate payloads of 40 kg (~90 pounds). The Bistatic Radar for LEO Survey #BIRALES is an Italian radar sensor devoted to #spacesurveillance and is operational since 2015. It is operated by INAF Istituto di Radioastronomia, Aeronautica Militare and Leonardo, with further support from Politecnico di Milano. Currently, the sensor is involved in both national and international #spacetrafficmanagement activities, through thousands of observations carried out per year and a remarkable contribution to EU SST consortium. The receiver station is currently undergoing an infrastructural upgrade process, and a new transmitting station will become operational in next future. Overall, this will further improve #BIRALES contribution to build up and maintain space objects catalogue, which is crucial for #ssa and #sst operations. From its foundation, SPIRE PoliMi supports #BIRALES operations and research, by conducting simulations, planning observations, and processing acquired data. In addition, an innovative adaptive beamforming technique has been developed to improve the angular measurement quality, also guaranteeing to correctly monitor #fragmentations and #proximityoperations. In the years, the research has been carried out in different frameworks, the most remarkable being the Croce del Nord #ngcroce - PNRR Next Generation EU. Among SPIRE PoliMi staff, Marco Felice Montaruli, Maria Alessandra De Luca, Pierluigi Di Lizia and Mauro Massari are now involved in these activities, with further contribution from Michele Maestrini and Gaetano Calabrò.
