It's time to start celebrating DIVERSITY in all of its forms! Food connects nature and culture, making biodiversity essential for a resilient future. Around the world, 75% of edible plant species have become extinct, and three cereals—wheat, rice, and corn—make up 60% of our food production. This loss of biodiversity impacts our ability to cope with the climate crisis and ensure food security for all. Agroecology is the answer.🌱 By preserving and promoting food biodiversity, we can create sustainable farming systems that combat climate change and produce good, clean, and fair food. Diversity in plants, animals, and cultures strengthens our food systems, making them more resilient and adaptable. At Terra Madre 2024, Slow Food will showcase the importance of diversity in all its forms. From diverse culinary traditions to preserving local products, the event will highlight how biodiversity enriches our lives and sustains our planet. Learn more about diversity in our article: https://lnkd.in/exNtRbkA #SlowFood #Biodiversity #TerraMadre2024

🌱 On May 23rd, the Department of Agriculture at the Hellenic Mediterranean University in Crete hosted a participatory workshop in the context of the European elections. Organized as part of Slow Food's "Feed the Change" campaign, the event aimed to raise awareness about sustainable farming policies in the EU. Led by a Slow Food activist and a PhD student, the workshop provided an in-depth look at the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), highlighting its successes and areas for improvement. The engaging discussion that followed focused on local and EU-level farming challenges, emphasizing the need for fairer agricultural policies, more incentives for agroecology, and better support for young farmers. Key takeaways included the importance of adapting policies to regional needs and holding national decision-makers accountable. Students left empowered with a deeper understanding of sustainable farming frameworks and the changes needed for a more inclusive future in agriculture. 👩🌾👨🌾 #SustainableFarming #EUagriculture #FeedTheChange #GoodFoodGoodFarming #Agriculture #EUelections #Sustainability #FutureOfFarming

🌱 As the re-election of Ursula von der Leyen as President of the European Commission is now official, Slow Food calls on her to demonstrate her commitment to fair and sustainable food and farming, as outlined in the EU Green Deal. Despite recent concerns about the focus on agriculture in the next Commission's priorities, we urge for clear, effective policies that align with long-term sustainability goals. Marta Messa, Slow Food’s Secretary General, emphasizes the necessity of transitioning to sustainable food systems for planetary resilience. Slow Food remains dedicated to the EU Strategic Dialogue on the Future of Agriculture and urges for concerted efforts to ensure meaningful progress. Ahead of her reelection, von der Leyen's vision centered on food security. We call on her to ensure this vision is deeply rooted in sustainability, empowering a just transition for all in the food system. Slow Food will continue its active role in shaping and monitoring the Commission's programme to keep sustainable food systems high on the agenda. Agroecology stands as a key enabler for this transformation, reconnecting nature with human activities and fostering stronger links among all food system actors. We reaffirm the urgent need for a transition to agroecology, demanding commitment from all EU institutions. Slow Food urges President von der Leyen to: - Translate commitments into effective policies for sustainable food systems. - Support a just and inclusive transition with robust financial aid for farmers. - Prioritize environmental, animal welfare, and health standards in European and trade policies. - Ensure transparent, participatory governance.
