It has been a productive week in Nürnberg! Our R&D engineers Matteo Iacomini and Giacomo Giuliani visited the Helmholtz-Institut Erlangen-Nürnberg für Erneuerbare Energien (HI ERN), to test new processes and equipment for the scale-up of our R2R printed harvesters, as well as to explore advanced characterization methods on our indoor PV cells. During this LOPEC edition we presented Berry PV, our photovoltaic-powered sensing BLE beacon demo. Berry PV is a complete solution that includes a physical hardware layer and a digital cloud server layer: the sensors data gathered by the device (including temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, acceleration and rotation) are encrypted at beacon level, thus granting a high-level security and privacy, and communicated via wireless protocols (specifically BLE, Bluetooth Low Energy) to Ribes Tech’s cloud for data analysis and aggregation. The electronic design of the board was conceived to make the best out of the energy harvested from the environment, by combining low-power elements to reduce consumption to the bare minimum and by providing 3 different power supply configurations, depending on the application needs: 1) Batteryless mode. The board relies exclusively on Ribes Tech's photovoltaic modules as its power source. The system was designed to communicate according to the amount of energy available: therefore, the communication frequency is high in luminous environments and is reduced when the tag is moved to dimly-lit spaces. Thanks to a low stand-by power consumption of 2 uA, the badge-sized (6x4 cm) device can already communicate from illuminations as low as 10 lux. 2) Supercap mode. The working principle is similar to the previous solution, but in this solution the PV module charges a supercapacitor, meaning that the device can be active also when it is illuminated below the 10 lux threshold, thus withstanding also operation in the dark for a limited amount of time. 3) Battery mode. The system is powered by a lithium-manganese oxide battery, recharged by the PV panel whenever light is available. To keep the electronic design as simple as possible, no PMIC was included and voltage regulation is implemented simply through an analog input of the microcontroller. Introducing the master students of Politecnico di Milano to printed photovoltaics! Yesterday our CEO Antonio Iacchetti lectured the "Physics of photovoltaic processes" class of Prof. Guglielmo Lanzani, illustrating the working principles of organic solar devices and the roll to roll deposition techniques of carbon-based inks to mass produce large-area flexible modules. Of course, a special focus was dedicated to fully printed indoor harvesters, giving also an overview of Ribes Tech srl and of the exciting applications that we are currently targeting, as well as our future challenges.
