The Prime Minister of Georgia unveils the Tbilisi - Sagarejo Highway, a project supervised by IRD Engineering A ceremony to open to traffic the Tbilisi - Sagarejo Highway was organised last week under the auspices of the Prime Minister of Georgia, Mr. Irakli Kobakhidze, and the Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure, Mr. Irakli Karseladze, and counting also on the attendance of other high officials of the government, including the management team of the Roads Department under the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia as well as representatives of International Financing Institutions and diplomat missions present in the country.   It was in 2022 when IRD Engineering signed a contract funded by the national budget and aimed at carrying out all the duties of “The Engineer” according to FIDIC - International Federation of Consulting Engineers - Conditions of Contract (Red Book) during the implementation of this new 35-kilometer highway, part of the 4-laned Kakheti Highway's 85-kilometer section.   The new cement-concrete pavement road section, which includes 4 interchanges and 41 bridges, is located in the Kakheti region, one of the main historical, economic and cultural areas in Georgia, being part of the main transport corridor to the north-western region of Azerbaijan.   "Today we are inaugurating this 35-kilometer long 4-laned highway, from Tbilisi to Sagarejo, a very important step for the implementation of the overall project related to the construction of the 85-kilometer Kakheti Highway. The new road bypasses four densely populated towns, reducing traffic in these settlements, ensuring the highest road safety standards, cutting travel time in half, and tripling the overall traffic capacity. After the completion of all Kakheti Highway sections, it will take only 80 minutes to travel from Tbilisi to Telavi”, Mr. Kobakhidze, Prime Minister of Georgia, said.   The Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure, Mr. Karseladze, also declared during the event: “The first and most challenging section of the highway has now been completed. The new road will be of great importance both for the population of the region and for the development of the international transport corridors in our country”. He also highlighted all ongoing road infrastructure developments in Kakheti, revealing that approximately 600 km of roads have been rehabilitated in the last three years, and around 1,600 km constructed or rehabilitated since 2012.   IRD Engineering is present in Georgia for more than a decade. The Lugoj-Deva Motorway (Autostrada A1), Lot 2: A Visionary Project Shaping Romania It was in July 2023 when representatives of IRD Engineering and the Romanian National Road Infrastructure Company - C.N.A.I.R. S.A. inked a new contract aimed at the provision of supervision services during the construction of Lot 2 on the Lugoj - Deva Motorway (Autostrada A1), one of the most impressive projects reflecting IRD Engineering commitment to innovation. This section, almost 10 kilometers-long and with 2 kilometers of double pipe tunnels, is the only missing part to complete the highway between Sibiu and the border with Hungary. The Lugoj-Deva Motorway is not just another infrastructure project; it is a cornerstone in the modernization of Romania's transport network. Imagine a state-of-the-art road corridor connecting the heart of Romania, its capital Bucharest, with the western border of the country, through a route that not only reduces travel time but also offers a safe and efficient experience for all users. This crucial lot includes one of the most remarkable technical landmarks in the country – The T2 Tunnel, which will become the longest road tunnel in Romania. The T2 Tunnel: A Spectacular Technical Achievement The T2 Tunnel, 1,825 meters-long in its left gallery and 1,985 meters-long in its right gallery, crosses mountains and also opens up new horizons for an efficient and fast transport. Also known as the "Bears Tunnel" due to the ecological measures it integrates, it will allow wildlife to continue their natural paths while protecting the surrounding environment. Complex Infrastructure: A Perfect Engineering Mechanism The Lot 2 of the Lugoj-Deva motorway does not stop there. It also includes two viaducts, two underpasses, one overpass, five prefabricated culverts, and seven box structures. All these elements form a well-designed and harmonious road infrastructure, integrating sustainable solutions to minimize environmental impacts. Current Progress and Vision for the Future The recent achievement of obtaining the construction permit for Phase II, Subsection E2 (km 52 780 – km 56 220), marked an important step in the realization of this project. To date, more than 650 piles have been completed, and the works continue at an impressive and rapid pace, with each structure bringing us closer to its completion. Progress in the construction of several sections of the Pan-European Railway Corridors VIII and X in North Macedonia, a project supervised by IRD Engineering   It was back in July 2022 when the signature of the contracts for the construction of the railway sections Kumanovo - Beljakovce and Beljakovce - Kriva Palanka (Corridor VIII) was held. An additional section on Corridor X was subsequently added to the contract (Section Nogaevci – Negotino). Works kicked off at the end of October 2022.   Now, after less than two years, this is the current progress in the three works contracts:   Lot 1 - Section Kumanovo - Beljakovce on Rail Corridor VIII (30.8 km, FIDIC Yellow Book 1999): Works are in the final phases and the Taking Over Certificate is foreseen to be issued in December 2024, with all works completed in time and within the contract budget. Lot 2 - Section Beljakovce - Kriva Palnaka on Rail Corridor VIII (34 km, FIDIC Red Book 1999): Works are progressing. Expected finalization in 2026.   Lot 3 - Section Nogaevci – Negotino on Rail Corridor X (30.99 km, FIDIC Red Book 1999): Works were completed and the Taking Over Certificate was issued in July 2023.   When finalized, the Pan-European Corridor VIII will link the Bulgarian Black Sea ports of Varna and Burgas with the Italian Adriatic port of Bari. The central part of this 315 km-long corridor will run through North Macedonia. However, this segment lacks important links in its eastern part (from Kumanovo to the border with Bulgaria) and in its western part (from Kicevo to the border with Albania). The Pan-European Rail Corridor VIII will increase the annual cargo volume by 20% until 2040 and will provide access to up-to-date means of transport for more than 350,000 people. For this reason, it has received full support from the European Union, the European Investment Bank (EIB), the EBRD, and NATO. The project has benefited from generous grants and favorable loans to facilitate its realization.   IRD Engineering is active in North Macedonia since 2003. IRD Engineering sponsor of the 13th Congress on Transport and Transport Infrastructure in Bosnia and Herzegovina   The 13th Congress on Transport and Transport Infrastructure in Bosnia and Herzegovina took place last 19th and 20th September 2024 in Sarajevo. Organised by the Association of Consulting Engineers of Bosnia and Herzegovina (UKI BiH), in collaboration with the European Union Road Federation (ERF), it is the most important professional event in the road sector in Bosnia, and one of the most significant sectoral conferences in the whole region.   The main topics of the current edition, in which IRD Engineering was one of the sponsors, were:   Green road transport; TEN-T network; Smart transport in urban areas; Studies and projects; A safer road network.   IRD Engineering is present in Bosnia and Herzegovina since 2003, operating through a branch office in Sarajevo and subsidiary company in Banja Luka and having all the necessary licences to work in the road and railway engineering sectors. IRD Engineering sets up a branch in Bangladesh IRD Engineering has recently set up a new branch in Dhaka, capital city of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. The company is already present in the country and is participating in three important transport infrastructure contracts: 1) Construction Supervision and Project Implementation Consultant for Wecare Phase-L: Jhenaidah - Jashore Highway (N-7) Improvement Project: The major objective of this The World Bank-funded project is to upgrade the 48 km-long Jhenaidah - Jashore Highway section of National Highway N-7, as a smart, climate resilient and safe mode of transportation. The road section is a 4-lane dual carriageway with separate service lanes for slow-moving vehicles and vulnerable users on both sides of the carriageway.     2) Construction Supervision Consultant for the Improvement of the Sylhet-Tamabil Road to Four-Lane Highway with Separate Slow Moving Vehicular Traffic Lanes Project: Financed by the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), the assignment aims to improve intercity connectivity in Bangladesh and cross-border connectivity between Bangladesh and India, by upgrading the Bangladeshi National Highway N2 between Sylhet City to the Tamabil border point, from a two-lane single carriageway to a four-lane dual carriageway highway. The 56 kilometers-long Sylhet-Tamabil highway is part of the Asian Highway-1. This corridor is strategically important for sub-regional connectivity with the northeastern states of India, as well as with Bhutan, Myanmar, and China.   3) Consulting Services by Project Implementation Consultant for Supervision of Civil Works and Safeguard Activities of South Asia Subregional Economic Cooperation Dhaka-Sylhet Corridor Road Investment Project: This important road connects Dhaka to the border with India via the Sylhet-Tamabil section. The $2.69 billion overall scheme is financed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of Bangladesh. The scope of civil works under the investment project includes the improvement of the existing 210 kilometers long two-lane Dhaka–Sylhet National Highway (N2) into a four-lane divided carriageway with service lanes on both sides.    In all these 3 projects IRD Engineering is a member of different Joint Ventures led by Intercontinental Consultants and Technocrats Pvt. The spectacular Hercegovina Bridge, a project supervised by IRD Engineering, officially open to traffic   Last September 4th, an official ceremony took place to open the motorway section Počitelj – Zvirovići and the breathtaking Hercegovina Bridge, which is among the highest bridges in Southeast Europe, with its highest pillar being over 100 meters high. The bridge, classified as a prestressed concrete frame structure with 7 spans with a total length of 945 meters, is also unique in that all four lanes of the highway are located on one single structure.   The event was headed by the Prime Minister of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Mr. Nermin Nikšić, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Croatia, Mr. Andrej Plenkovic, the Chairwoman of the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Mrs. Borjana Krišto, the Director of JP Autoceste FBiH (Motorways of Bosnia and Herzegovina), Mr. Denis Lasić, the Head of Cooperation at the EU Delegation to Bosnia, Mr. Stefano Ellero, the Vice-President of the European Investment Bank (EIB), Mr. Robert de Groot, as well as other important authorities and senior staff from the contractor, the designer, and the supervision team.   The audience was greeted and addressed by the Director of JP Autoceste FBIH, Mr. Denis Lasić. “We will not stop with the construction of the highway through Herzegovina. We will also continue to connect the southern part of the country with the new 30 kilometers to Mostar North, by the end of the year”, said Lasic. He also warmly thanked the European Union, the EBRD and the EIB for their continuous financial support to numerous projects on Corridor Vc.   In 2019, IRD Engineering signed a contract with JP Autoceste FBIH for the provision of construction supervision services on the Motorway Section Pocitelj – Zvirovici, to carry out the duties of “the Engineer” in accordance with FIDIC Conditions of Contract (Red Book). The overall objective of the assignment was to ensure a high-quality construction and that all works were carried out in full compliance with the engineering design and technical specification described in the civil works contract.   The construction of the Hercegovina Bridge has been financed from funds secured under a loan agreement concluded with the European Investment Bank  and from grants from the European Union through the WBIF - Western Balkans Investment Framework.   At IRD Engineering, we feel particularly proud for having given our contribution to this historic infrastructure project in Bosnia and Herzegovina, a country where we have a stable presence thanks to the commitment of a team of brilliant professionals. IRD Engineering featured at ENR’s Top 225 International Design Firms list for 2024 ENR (Engineering News-Record), a leading publication in the civil engineering industry, has just released the 2024’s edition of its reputable Top 225 International Design Firms list, a ranking of engineering companies based on export revenue generated from projects outside each’s respective home country. As a result of the consolidated activities in Eastern Europe, Caucasus, Central Asia, and South Asia, this year IRD Engineering has ranked 131st, climbing five positions since 2019.   In 2023, IRD Engineering worked in very important infrastructure projects in more than 30 countries all over the world, such as North Macedonia, Mongolia, Armenia, Sao Tome and Principe, Laos, Uzbekistan, India, Romania, Bangladesh, Serbia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Montenegro, Nepal, Ukraine, Albania, Moldova, Bulgaria, Georgia, or Bosnia and Herzegovina, to name a few.
