I will always remember it as one of the greatest honors of my life to act (yes, act!) in a first-of-a-kind theatrical play on #ClimateChange. Director Gloria Benedikt brought together an incredible cast: actors, dancers, a soprano star, leading sustainability scientists & personalities, in an unforgettable Call to Action—sold out, at the prestigious Odeon #Theatre in Vienna. It was a powerful message at the heart of Europe, unmasking an entire political/business system “gambling away our future for short-term interests”. This accentuates a complex reality: even as countries aim to reduce fossil fuel dependence, the energy sector dominates international trade. 1️⃣ Persistent dependency on oil: While many countries have pledged to transition to cleaner energy, the world still relies heavily on oil for transportation, industrial processes, and energy production. The very scale of petroleum exports reflects ongoing demand, particularly in developing nations where energy needs to grow 2️⃣ Energy sector's leading role: Including natural gas, coal, and electricity, the energy sector contributes 40% of the total value of global commodity exports. The sector's significant share characterises the challenges in shifting away from fossil fuels while still meeting global energy demand 3️⃣ Decarbonization efforts face resistance: Although there is a growing focus on renewable energy, high fossil fuel exports reveal a lag in adopting cleaner alternatives.
