Chi siamo
For more than 50 years, ICTP has promoted scientific expertise and research excellence throughout the world. Founded in 1964 by the late Nobel Laureate Abdus Salam, ICTP seeks to accomplish its mandate by providing scientists from developing countries with the continuing education and skills that they need in order to enjoy long and productive careers. ICTP opens its doors every year to more than 5000 scientists from 140 countries, in the spirit of Salam’s belief that “scientific thought is the common heritage of mankind”. These visitors attend the Centre’s offering of nearly 60 conferences a year. Some stay longer, perhaps as participants of the Centre’s Associates Scheme, which supports visits of several months at a time over a three year period; or, as students in ICTP’s Postgraduate Diploma Programme, a year-long, intense course of study to prepare young scientists from the developing world for graduate study. ICTP’s unique strength lies in its ability to bring together large numbers of gifted scientists from developing and developed countries to participate in joint research. From its early focus on theoretical high energy physics, the Centre’s research areas have evolved in response to the needs of physicists and mathematicians from the developing world, and now include: > High Energy, Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics > Condensed Matter and Statistical Physics (including renewable energy) > Mathematics > Earth System Physics > Applied Physics > Quantitative Life Sciences Today, ICTP continues its role as an international crossroad for science. Curiosity and the will to explore the mysteries of the universe are still at the very heart of what motivates the Centre. Its inclusive approach spreads knowledge and peace to every corner of the world, to every country despite adverse learning or research conditions.

🚀 Exciting News! 🚀 I am excited to announce that I have successfully participated in and completed the Workshop on Classical and Quantum Machine Learning for Condensed Matter Physics held from June 19-21, 2024. This workshop, directed by experts in the field, provided me with fascinating insights and advanced knowledge in quantum machine learning as well as other related topics. My favorite part was getting to use Qiskit and build a foundation upon which we can create more complex simulations and applications. Additionally, I had the opportunity to work on a mini-project focused on quantum machine learning, which greatly enhanced my understanding and allowed me to absorb the workshop content more effectively. A special thank you to the directors at The National Research and Innovation Agency of The Republic of Indonesia and the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) organizers for making this possible. I am happy to have joined everyone in this enriching activity, and the skills gained from this workshop will significantly benefit my ongoing research in quantum physics! 🔬💫 #QuantumComputing #MachineLearning #CondensedMatterPhysics #ContinuousLearning #Research #Workshop #QuantumMachineLearning #ICTP #BRIN

"pH drives electron density fluctuations that enhance electric field-induced liquid flow": https://lnkd.in/gXffgwDQ Why oil swims faster at basic pH? Hydrophobic objects, such as oil droplets, in aqueous solutions acquire an extra-mobility at basic pH. Classical continuum theory predicts that this increase is due to an increased surface charge due to free OH- species. In collaboration with the experimental group led by Sylvie Roke of EPFL and with the theoretical group led by Ali Hassanali of Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), our colleague Giuseppe Cassone has shown in a #NatureCommunications paper that surface charge at oily nanodroplet surfaces is identical at neutral and mildly basic pH, highlighting a quantum-driven mechanism underlying the behavior of hydrophobic nano-objects in aqueous solutions under external electric fields. This novel and general mechanism deeply impacts a plethora of processes in biology, chemistry, and nanotechnology and provides a comprehensive explanation of how pH influences hydrodynamic phenomena. #CNR #DSCTM #abinitio #moleculardynamics #hydrophobicity #electrophoresis

One of my dreams just came true! There were days during my bachelor’s where I used to watch Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP)'s lectures on cosmology on YouTube, never imagining that I’d find myself in that same lecture hall two years later. Now, it feels surreal to have had the unforgettable opportunity to attend the Summer school in Cosmology at the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy. This school provided a comprehensive introduction to the current state of research in cosmology, covering Inflation Theory, Gravitational Waves, CMB, Structure Formation, and Dark Matter. The curriculum spanned from theoretical approaches to observational inferences, and I couldn’t have asked for a more enriching experience. One of the highlights was learning about Structure Formation from Fabian Schmidt, renowned for his contributions to modern cosmology. From studying cosmology through his book to attending his lectures in person, I feel profoundly grateful for this incredible journey. Additionally, each distinguished faculty member provided a solid foundation for concepts I had not encountered before and introduced innovative approaches to tackling various research problems. Beyond the academic rigor, what made this summer truly special was the interaction with fellow participants, including PhD students from diverse backgrounds, and the esteemed faculty. These conversations have inspired me to think more creatively and approach problems from new perspectives. Reflecting on this experience, I’ve learned two valuable lessons: 1. Always strive for excellence. You never know what incredible opportunities are waiting for you. 2. Trust the process and keep going. Never quit on what you love to do. I am immensely grateful for the chance to learn from some of the brightest minds in the field. This opportunity wouldn’t have been possible without the support of my mentor, Prof. Dr. Cristiano Porciani. I look forward to continuing this journey and applying these insights to my future research. #Cosmology #ICTP #SummerSchool

I am humbled to be among the few young physicists in Africa selected to be lectured by some of the world's best physicists. 🙇🏽♂️🙌🏽 Everything about the African School of Fundamental Physics (ASP) 2024, from the welcome address by the Director of the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) to the closing ceremony and the glorious lectures in between, was a huge inspiration, motivation, and enlightenment. This school revealed the beauty of our togetherness and strengthened my conviction in the bright future of Science in Africa—a belief I have held deeply all my life. ✨ I can't find 99% of the gaps and fears I had going into the school. I came out a better physicist and person. 😁 My sincere appreciation to: Dr. Kétévi Adiklè Assamagan, the proactive founder of ASP, and the entire organizing team. Mounia Laassiri , for all the energy she put into making this a success, especially with publicity and relations during the application window. My favorite lecturer of the school, Luna Pellegri. More than your deep knowledge in nuclear physics, your ability to communicate it and engage your students is admirable and inspired me so much. 🙌🏽 Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) , Cadi Ayyad University, Mohammed V University in Rabat, CERN DESY Everyone, school and organization unmentioned who contributed to this great win.
