🌱 A new chapter for the Cleantech Friendship Group in the European Parliament 🏭   Today, recently elected members of the European Parliament across parties met for an inaugural discussion in Strasbourg, laying the foundation and mission for a renewed Cleantech Friendship Group.   Top priorities for EU clean technologies were discussed looking ahead to the new mandate, including:   👩🏭 Developing an Industrial Deal that focuses on #cleantech leadership and jobs, and leverages a deepened #singlemarket   💶 Financing the #industrialisation of clean technologies in Europe, with de-risking instruments and by completing the Capital Markets Union   🏹 Increasing strategic focus and allow the EU to build up cleantech manufacturing in a few key sectors   🤝 Building a coalition for cleantech leadership in the European Parliament, leveraging vision and expertise for the long-term #competitiveness of the European economy   Congrats to Lídia Pereira and Thomas Pellerin-Carlin for chairing this session, and to Vice-President Martin Hojsik, Michael Bloss, Hildegard Bentele, Annalisa Corrado, minister Isabella Lövin, Paulo Cunha, minister Bruno Tobback, former commissioner Vytenis Andrukaitis, Niels Flemming Hansen and Niels Fuglsang for their leadership on this critical topic. During the vibrant event in #Roma, I had the pleasure of presenting the second Italian Climate Tech 2023 report with MITO Technology, showcasing the dynamic and rapidly evolving Italian cleantech landscape. 💡𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝘍𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘚𝘶𝘳𝘨𝘦: 2023 witnessed cleantech total funding reached €322.3 million - a new record 𝘓𝘢𝘳𝘨𝘦𝘳 𝘋𝘦𝘢𝘭 𝘚𝘪𝘻𝘦: Post-seed rounds in the €5-20 million range increased, boosting the average deal size to €2.7 million and the median to €0.8 million. 𝘚𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳: The energy sector led the way, capturing 37.9% of the total deal value, followed by agrifood at 20.0%. 🎉Inaugural Cleantech for Italy Event in Rome🎉 Today, 60 players in the Italian cleantech ecosystem came together in Rome, to chart a path forward for Italy’s cleantech competitiveness. Joined by representatives of Bill Gates-founded Breakthrough Energy , participants discussed Italy’s role in Europe’s cleantech landscape and how to unlock its full potential. The discussion at the event was based around Cleantech for Italy’s first report (linked below in the comment section), which explores the state of the country’s cleantech ecosystem. Key takeaways from the report, which was co-authored by incoming Cleantech for Italy Director Federico Cuppoloni and MITO Technology's Investment Director Leonardo Massa: 📈 In 2023, cleantech funding in Italy, encompassing equity, debt, and grants, surged to a record €322.3 million, marking a 68.6% increase from 2022. 💶 There was a notable increase in larger, post-seed rounds in the range of €5-20 million. ⚡ The energy sector received the most funding in 2023, capturing 37.9% of the total deal value, followed by agrifood at 20.0%. ⚠️ Despite the positive trends, Italy significantly lags behind comparable European countries in venture capital cleantech investments, with only €3.8 invested per capita (compared to €43.2 in France and €38.8 in Germany). By fostering collaboration between government, industry, investors, incubators and academia, Italy can capitalise on its strengths to drive innovation, attract investment and create new opportunities for economic growth. Cleantech for Italy aims to bridge the gaps between these stakeholders in order to supercharge the already promising Italian cleantech sector. When Leonardo Massa and I began analysing the Italian cleantech ecosystem nearly two years ago, we could not imagine the significant advances occurring behind the scenes. Startups such as Energy Dome were on the verge of securing impressive funding rounds from domestic and international investors. At the same time, a new wave of early-stage cleantech funds began their fundraising efforts. These developments highlighted the need for Italy to progress its cleantech agenda. This includes creating a favourable environment for late-stage technology development, establishing a strong pipeline of high-quality investment prospects and making sure that the country takes full advantage of its industrial and financial power to sustain these efforts. After months of meetings to understand the current state of affairs, I'm pleased to announce that, in the upcoming months, I will be working to develop and launch Cleantech for Italy (part of the Cleantech for Europe initiative). With the support of Breakthrough Energy we will work to bridge the gap between climate technology and policy, ensuring Italy is at the forefront of global cleantech leadership.
