This study, utilizing 3D modeling, shows that PFAS can migrate from external surfaces through human skin into the bloodstream. 🔍 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀: 🧬 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆: Scientists tested 17 types of PFAS, using a 3D human skin model, to observe the substances' ability to permeate skin barriers. ⬆️ 𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀: Permeation rates were notably high for substances with shorter carbon chains, such as perfluoropentanoic acid and perfluorobutane sulfonate, indicating that these shorter-chain PFAS are more likely to be absorbed through the skin. 🚨 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: The findings suggest that skin contact with products containing PFAS, like cosmetics and water-repellent clothing, is a significant exposure route, potentially more critical than previously understood. 🔬 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁:The shift in industry practices towards shorter-chain PFAS, believed to be less toxic, might inadvertently increase human absorption rates, raising new concerns over their safety and environmental impact.
