📢 Intense weeks in the EU institutions and the transport community! The Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU closed the current legislative term with yesterday’s meeting of the Transport Council. ❓ The results? Weights & Dimensions of Trucks 🤗 EU Member States were not able to find an agreement (general approach) on the cross-border traffic of longer and heavier trucks due to concerns brought forward also by UIP & other rail organisations. A progress report was published instead. Pending an agreement from Council side, the file is on hold now. More on UIP’s concerns here ➡ https://lnkd.in/gxg2FkSF Rail Capacity 😑 The Member States adopted a general approach which runs counter to an efficient single railway system. The text weakens the proposal of the EU Commission and exploits rail capacity sub-optimally. In reaction, UIP together with RUs and shippers have issued a joint appeal for more ambition during the trilogue ➡ https://lnkd.in/eUw2qPik Combined Transport 🤔 No significant progress on the file for now. The Belgian Presidency presented a progress report yesterday, while the EU Parliament will only start its examination of the proposal after the summer break.🎯 UIP advocates for an inclusion in the future rules of: all necessary actions that will boost intermodal transport and make it more efficient, competitive & attractive. #IntermodalTransport #EU2024BE #RailFreight

Council’s rail capacity General Approach falls short of the rail freight sector’s needs! Yesterday, the Council of the European Union adopted a General Approach on the Railway Infrastructure Capacity proposal, which sadly does not meet the objectives of ultimately attracting more freight to rail. The initial proposal of the European Commission aimed to introduce harmonised rules to: 🛤 optimise railway capacity 🛤 improve cross-border coordination during capacity planning 🛤 adjust the timetable design to the needs of rail freight 😠 However, the Council’s general approach jeopardises these goals because it would enable Member States to impose national rules during the strategic capacity planning process where IMs decide how much capacity each rail transport service gets. This will lead only to a continued fragmentation and sub-optimal exploitation of the available European railway infrastructure capacity. #UIP together with the associations ERFA-European Rail Freight Association, CLECAT, European Shippers' Council and UIRR is calling upon the European Commission, European Parliament and the Council to work towards a more ambitious text that would meet the business requirements of a functioning European rail freight market. Else the EU goal of achieving a 50% growth of rail freight by 2030 is moot. Take a look at the joint statement here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eUw2qPik

“Shippers want to go for more rail. But they need us to be better. “ How to improve rail freight’s offer was the 🎯 center of discussions during our #UIP #KeepersSummit2024 on 30 May in Venice! Next to ensuring a level playing field among all modes and a better and connected infrastructure, the spotlight was on the needs and means of ushering in a new era of automated, digital and connected rail operations... and how #DAC can help with that. Check out our press release and our panelists’ presentations to learn about their thoughts and reflections! 👉 https://lnkd.in/eZYc9S37 “DAC will not be a walk in the park. The obstacles are many. This is a systemic change we are talking about, with an impact on all aspects of rail freight: safety, infrastructure, procedures, manufacturing, maintenance, etc... but it is so worth it.” We extend a heartfelt thank you to our many participants but of course also to our many brilliant speakers and moderators: Andrea Tomaello, Edoardo Rixi, armando degirolamo, Gilles Peterhans, Renato Imbruglia, Mark Topal Gökceli, Sabrina De Filippis, pier luigi giovanni navone, Gianluca Tomei, Paolo Pagliero, Giorgio Travaini, Alessandro Panaro, Enrico Puija, Marco Campomenosi and Pasquale Russo, Gianpiero Strisciuglio, Fulvio Lino Di Blasio, Zeno D'Agostino and Donato Liguori. #FutureOfRailFreight #DareToInnovate #ChangeNow

“UIP works for a systemic digitalisation of rail freight.” On the occasion of our upcoming #KeepersSummit2024 on 30 May, our UIP President David Zindo sat down with Ferpress, Italian news agency specializing in the world of rail. In the interview they explore especially what rail freight stands to gain from a systemic digitalisation led by the implementation of #DAC. With a focus on the potential that the Digital Automatic Coupler can unlock, David Zindo makes a point of emphasizing its added value for society: “By investing in the DAC, Member States and EU Institutions are saving on a much bigger bill they inevitably have to foot by continuing to pay the price for emissions, pollution, congestion, state aid etc. (…) The EU has set goals in order to achieve the Green Deal objectives and we all know why we have to do everything we can to get there: to preserve our planet for future generations.” Check out the article in English on our website 👉 https://lnkd.in/eHs-4XiZ The original interview in Italian is available here 👉 https://lnkd.in/e4kdiRHE Happy reading!
