High-tech cutting-edge solutions in the treatment of severe AORTIC STENOSIS

Chi siamo

AORTICLAB is an innovative start-up that offers high-tech cutting-edge solutions in the treatment of AORTIC STENOSIS, which affects millions of people in the world. Even today, many of them are suffering from severe aortic stenosis and remain unteated. The AORTICLAB mission is to respond to the needs of patients suffering from severe aortic stenosis who have had no hope of cure to date because of their age or poor health conditions. In addition, we enable safer TAVI procedures that protect patients from cerebral (stroke) and peripheral risks, raising the quality and efficacy standards of aortic stenosis treatment. A beating heart carries memories, affections, emotions and little–big hopes for the future. Those who suffer from severe aortic stenosis, young and old alike, may have a shorter future expectation for them, but no less intense and no less deserving of hope. The profound value of each person’s story, the immense wealth of emotions that our loved ones reserve for us and sheer respect for all aspects of life are the inspiration that has driven us since day one. It is why our research and innovation path, state-of-the-art technology and protection walk hand in hand. The effectiveness of our solutions and the achievement of lower risk for patient and clinical staff are actually two parallel paths with a common endpoint: patients’ safety and quality of life. Pursuing this objective has brought us to the launch of products for safer and less invasive treatment of aortic stenosis, offering sustainable heart interventional solutions. We are a young business, founded on extensive experience. We are a cohesive team, driven by passion and by a pioneering approach. FLOwer (Embolic Protection Device) and GEMINI (Transcatheter Treatment) are currently under development. Commercial release for FLOwer is expected in 2023 in selected European countries.

🎉 We are glad to announce the opening of a new center in the Netherlands, at Maastricht UMC ! 💖 A special thank you to the entire team involved, especially to interventional cardiologist Pieter Vriesendorp and the cardiothoracic surgeon Suzanne Kats, MD, PhD, MBA for the successful use of our embolic protection device FLOWer during the TAVI procedure. The use of the filter was crucial, as it successfully blocked and captured a thrombus in its basket, which would have otherwise endangered the patient's health. 🌟 A heartfelt thanks to our new distributor Angiocare 🤝 we are truly excited about this partnership and look forward to achieving great things together!

First case in our Lab and in Tuscany of TAVI performed with the use of the FloWer embolic protection device (AorticLab - KARDIA Srl). We chose this new embolic protection system to mitigate the risk of stroke in a patient with porcelain aorta due to previous chest irradiation. The patient also had bilateral subclavian artery occlusion, preventing the use of filter-based embolic protection systems. The FloWer device was easily positioned in the aortic arch, allowing the passage of the TAVI delivery catheter without any interference, while filtering all the blood flow coming from the ascending aorta. Final removal was easy as well. A new tool to make TAVI safer for all patients! Special thanks to Domenica Mamone, Director of Medical Device Pharmacy, for making it possible to have the FloWer in 2 days time! Thanks also to Francesca Annis, Giulia Parigi, and Fabio Lombardini from KARDIA Srl for the support, and to my great team, Paolo Spontoni, Alessandro Sticchi, our nurses, and our study coordinator Eleonora Rofi!

🌟 Ensuring Patient Safety in TAVI: A Closer Look at Periprocedural Stroke 🌟   🚨 A Message from Our Chief Scientific Officer, Enrico Pasquino 🚨   I am excited to share findings from Kapadia and Reddy on the issue of periprocedural stroke after TAVI. New studies on EPDs show promising results in protecting cerebral and peripheral organs, reducing disabling strokes during TAVI. This complication is often considered by patients to be worse than death itself. Kapadia analyzed strokes in a large USA cohort of TAVI patients undergoing ViV-TAVI procedures with or without EPDs (1,610 vs. 17,480). The rate of overall strokes was significantly higher in non-EPD patients (4.3% non-EPD vs. 2.0% EPD) as well as for major strokes (3.3% non-EPD vs. 1.7% EPD). He concluded that operators should consider utilizing EPDs for patients undergoing ViV-TAVI. By 2035, ViV-TAVI procedures will increase fivefold (8,000 in 2024 vs. 40,000 in 2035).   Reddy published, in EuroIntervention, a review of the literature on the epidemiology and mechanisms of neurological events in TAVI patients and evaluated potential preventive measures. Tables for procedural and clinical risk factors for strokes in TAVI have been identified, with significant evidence supporting the use of EPDs.   I further emphasize that, besides procedural and clinical factors, EPD design plays an important role in protecting patients during TAVI. Key factors for EPD clinical adoption include device stability, usability, full body protection with low pore size filter mesh, low intrinsic device embolic potential, and low vascular access site injuries.   📊 Key Findings • Fivefold ViV-TAVI procedures growing by 2035 •  ViV-TAVI stroke risk: 2.0% or 4.3% w/wo EPD • EPDs to be used when procedural and clinical factors are present •  Efficacy stability and easy of use as key factors for EPDs adoption   🧠 Understanding Stroke Origins Reddy highlights that acute stroke (<24 hours) is often due to embolization of valve debris or thrombus during the procedure. Captured materials like calcium, tissue, thrombus, and atheroma in EPDs offer insights into stroke prevention.   🔧 EPDs and Their Future EPDs use is increasing but not yet widespread. Evidence supports their efficacy, and ongoing trials may expand their use from capturing debris to actively preventing stroke during TAVI.   🌸 Proud Mention: FLOWer Our product, FLOWer (CE marked), is cited in Reddy’s paper among EPDs advancing patient safety during TAVI. This highlights our commitment to innovation in healthcare.   As Chief Scientific Officer at AorticLab, I believe in investing in research and technology to enhance patient safety during TAVI and other procedures at risk for ischemic stroke. Preventing stroke is crucial, and with advancements in EPDs technology, we are moving towards a safer future for patients.   Read the full papers for comprehensive insights.
