What if I told you the loss of vultures in India caused 500,000 people to die? Most people would be surprised, because while we express concern about biodiversity loss, most see at best, an indirect link with human life.   So, consider this. In India, between the mid 90’s through to 2006, the vulture population fell by 95%. An anti-inflammatory drug used in livestock was toxic to the birds and by the time this was identified and banned, 2006, it was too late. A recent study concluded that the population collapse of this keystone species, resulted in over half a million excess human deaths throughout the country. The vultures had disposed of rotting carcases and their disappearance meant those carcasses were washing into waterways, decreasing water quality and causing “A sanitation shock”. It also increased the population of feral dogs carrying rabies. It is a phenomenal example of how impactful collapses in wildlife/ecosystems can be on humanity. A separate study concluded that losses in Ash Tree numbers in the US increased cardiovascular/respiratory illness deaths. Another argued that the presence of wolves in Wisconsin decreased vehicle collusions by 25%, resulting in an economic benefit 63x greater than the cost of wolves to livestock. The costs associated with biodiversity loss are often ignored or misrepresented. We need to review impacts as a system, not as individual parts. From '400 paar to Coalition Sarkar' needs on ground a few #process #corrections, in my opinion. This transition in the composition of the probable Union Government needs a decisive correction of #attitude of the #spokespeople of #BJP and the #proright #influencers appearing on the media. They have to tone down their earlier #rhetoric and body language. They also have to learn to make space , and accept the spokespeople of the coalition partners, such as, #TDP and #JD(U), to make comments and announcements on policy matters. I understand, it is a bit early, because since 2014 they were not trained and prepared for such a situation. However , this is not a probable Union Government with one party majority any more. The political reality has changed. #Communications and #media #interaction like the #policy #formation have to be more consultative.
