It was a pleasure to share my thoughts at ‘Goafest’ the premier event of Advertising Agencies Association of India (AAAI) and The Advertising Club. The subject of my talk was “Navigating the age of adaptability: leading with flexibility, vision and purpose”. I covered the subject in five parts: A) The factors that have contributed to the end of era of great moderation. B) What does adaptability in organisations entail and the finer distinction between flexibility and agility. C) Clarity between Vision, Mission and Purpose. The reasons why Purpose has its share of cynics, critics and controversies. The manner in which organisations could pursue the path of purpose and how do we incorporate purpose in the fabric of the organization. D) The leadership attributes required in the new turbulent world. E) What should the world of advertising focus on in the age of adaptability? In subsequent posts I will share the gist of my thoughts on each of the above parts.

Today I will talk about Vision, Purpose and Mission which are interconnected concepts. Vision is a broad aspirational statement that paints a picture of what success looks like. Purpose is the reason behind what an organization does and reflects their fundamental beliefs and values. A mission on the other hand is a specific statement that outlines actions, objectives and activities an organization undertakes to fulfil its purpose and vision. Reasons why we have cynics and critics about purpose is because very often it lacks authenticity, clarity & consistency, there is misalignment between the purpose and strategies, there is inability to measure impact stakeholders may have differing expectations and many leaders camouflage their non performance by talking about purpose. Organisations could pursue the path of purpose: - By treating it as a deeply held commitment and not a lever to be pulled - By inspiring people and creating a sense of meaning by connecting the work people do with their feelings and values - By ensuring it is authentic, coherent, has integrity and is aligned with company’s strategy - By making it dynamic with leaders asking how are we living our purpose and how can we do it better ? The debate between ‘Purpose Vs Profits’ will not arise if you pursue the path of ‘Profits through Purpose’. It is an ‘and’ story and not ‘either or’ story.

While the edtech space has been going through a long spell of the so-called ‘funding winter’, PhysicsWallah (PW) appears close to raising a new large round. Fresh funding will be led by new investors whereas existing investors including Westbridge and GSV Ventures will also participate, three sources aware of the discussion  “PhysicsWallah is set to raise $150 million from new and existing backers,” said one of the sources requesting anonymity. “The terms of the deal have been sealed and the transaction is likely to be public soon.” This will be the second financing round for the Alakh Pandey-led firm in the past two years. PhysicWallah raised $100 million in a Series A round led by Westbridge and GSV Ventures in June 2022.  “PhysicsWallah will be valued at around $2.8 billion in the new round,” said another source who also wished not to be named. This will be over a 2.5X jump in the company’s valuation as PhysicsWallah was valued at $1.1 billion in its Series A funding. Queries sent to PhysicsWallah and Westbridge didn’t elicit any immediate response. We will carry their comments in case they respond. According to the startup data intelligence platform TheKredible, WestBridge held a 2.4% stake in PhysicWallah while GSV owned 1.44% as of the Series A round. Its co-founders Alakh Pandey and Prayeek Maheshwari cumulatively command 86.54% of the company. PhysicsWallah started with online coaching for IIT/JEE but has now become a full-fledged education firm, offering offline coaching, schools, colleges, and upskilling programmes. According to sources, about 30% of its revenue comes from JEE and NEET coaching whereas offline coaching (via Vidyapeeth and Pathshala) contributes 35% of the collection.  While the company is yet to disclose FY24 numbers, PhysicsWallah’s revenue surged 3.3X to Rs 779 crore in FY23.
