#ICCnewsletter: Four years ago, the ICC set out on a mission to build India’s climate philanthropy ecosystem. Philanthropic capital can play a catalytic role in India's climate story – for example, by testing and amplifying novel ideas, funding high-risk solutions, and unlocking additional private and public capital towards climate action. Insights on the state of climate philanthropy are also critical – they can enable capital to support India’s needs effectively. But, as data on fund flows is fragmented and inaccessible, we started gathering intelligence for the ecosystem. This month, we highlight insights from our latest assessment ‘Trends in climate philanthropy’, in which we analyse three prominent trends in climate giving and suggest five high-level takeaways for funders. In my oped Financial Express (India) , I observe why #carbon credit is a flawed tool against climate change. While carbon credits may be an approach to reducing overall emissions, they ultimately fall short of delivering substantive results. Carbon credits can be likened to outsourcing physical fitness by paying someone else to work out on your behalf. While it may seem convenient, this approach fails to address the root causes of the problem. Just as paying someone to exercise doesn't improve your own health, purchasing carbon offsets doesn't fundamentally reduce your carbon footprint.
