The Professors who influenced me during Executive MBA (EPGP-14) at IIMK #10      Prof. Tanushree Haldar (Managerial Economics, Pricing, Platform Markets) Prof Haldar, an outside faculty from IIM, Nagpur is an expert in Game Theory. The class started on an interesting note, discussing Swiggy and Zomato's introduction of platform fees. Then she went on to clarify that GT is the study of rational decision-making in strategic situations. We learned about Common knowledge of rationality with its endless loop of knowing. She elaborated on Dominant vs. dominated strategies, Sequential, Simultaneous, multiplayer, and Zero-Sum games. Specifically, the games Prisoners Dilemma, Battle of the Sexes, and Chicken Game kept us engaged. There were case studies depicting game theoretic situations. We learned about Judo Economics in the case of existing airlines reacting to a new entrant. We played many rounds of games in Simulation which were quite fun and learning on the go. We also comprehended why cartels are unstable using game representation. Though fascinating, it was very easy to get confused between the different kinds of games, the rows, and the columns. However, Prof. Haldar handled all the sessions of the 3-credit course with ease and confidence without getting ruffled by our frequent and varied doubts. She took us through Oligopoly markets, and we learned about the Cournot model of competition based on quantity with the first mover advantage. She contrasted it with the Bertrand model based on price competition having the 2nd mover advantage. She demonstrated that Profit maximization happens when Marginal revenue equals marginal cost. We learned to solve games of mixed strategy when probability comes into the picture like trying to predict the other player’s move in any game. For our project work, we had to formulate our own game with payoff matrix on a real-life problem on our chosen topic. We became familiar with Repeated games and their resolution. We watched some episodes of Golden Balls to study the effects of trust in Split Vs. Steal. We understood how cooperation can be achieved using Grim Trigger and Tit For Tat strategy for varying probability of game continuity. We learned through case studies that when faced with a sure-lose situation, you don’t play, or you try to change the rules. She took us briefly through Product proliferation on an Interesting aside. She taught us about Auctions and and discussed the Relative merits of English and Dutch auctions. We learned about the Nobel prize-winning Auction theory, in which 2nd price auction helps reveal the actual value of an item. She clarified how credible signaling can be done to segregate oranges in the presence of information asymmetry through Ackerlof’s market for lemons.
