आश्विम माह की पूर्णिमा तिथि का प्रारम्भ 16 अक्टूबर को रात 08 बजकर 40 मिनट पर हो रहा है। वहीं इस तिथि का समापन 17 अक्टूबर को दोपहर 04 बजकर 55 मिनट पर होगा। ऐसे में वाल्मीकि जयंती गुरुवार, 17 अक्टूबर को मनाई जाएगी। पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार, पहले वाल्मीकि का नाम रत्नाकर हुआ करता था। वह एक डाकू थे और वन में आए लोगों को लूट कर उसी से अपने परिवार पालन-पोषण करते थे। तब एक बार उन्होंने वन में आए नारद मुनि को लूटने का प्रयास किया। लेकिन नारद जी द्वारा दी गई शिक्षा से उनका हृदय परिवर्तन हो गया और उन्होंने अपने पापा की क्षमा याचना करने के लिए कठोर तपस्या की। वह तपस्या में इतने अधिक लीन हो गए कि उनके पूरे शरीर पर चींटियों ने बाँबी बना ली, इसी वजह से उनका वाल्मीकि पड़ा।
