🌍 Known as the 'Temple City of India' due to its rich cultural and historical heritage, Bhubaneswar, #India 🇮🇳 is now emerging as a model for modern urban development dedicated to improving #QualityOfLife for its citizens. As a city committed to smart city initiatives, green spaces 🌳, sustainable practices 🌱, and home to prestigious educational institutions 🎓 and healthcare facilities 🏥, it is well positioned to pilot measuring quality of life in its unique context. 📊 As a first step in the pilot process, the Quality of Life Initiative supported Bhubaneswar in conducting a workshop to co-create indicators to measure quality of life in the #city. Bhubaneswar is one of 11 pilot cities 🏙️ testing and co-developing the process with the Initiative in 2024. Engaging Citizens with Minecraft: A Fun Way to Shape Our Cities! 🔗 https://bit.ly/3YScXkm Imagine contributing to your city's future just by playing a game—sounds fun, right? That's exactly what the Young Gamechangers Initiative is doing with Minecraft! 🏙️🎮 We’re bringing urban planning to life by involving everyone, especially young people, in the process. Through the #YoungGamechangers Initiative, participants learn how to evaluate and design public spaces🌱 This project emphasizes the importance of inclusive urban planning, which is key to building sustainable cities, strengthening social bonds, and supporting local democracy. The initiative's Minecraft Design Studio recently held a fantastic training session in Jatni, India. Over three days, young changemakers learned to use Minecraft to visualize and design public spaces, ultimately presenting their ideas to local officials. The excitement was palpable, especially when the participants earned their certifications! Now, these young leaders are ready to share their knowledge with their communities, ensuring that everyone’s voice is heard in shaping our cities. Next up, they’ll collaborate with EMERGENT VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE LTD (Eva Studio) to create detailed proposals, which will be presented for participatory budgeting with the entire community. The International #YouthDay celebrations in Nairobi have brought together diverse and inspiring youth, government and private sector representatives, civil society, experts in #YouthLed development, and the UN. We are bringing you some highlights from the event - and with that, several reasons to call it a landmark event of 2024: 1. The event brought together over 130 youth leaders from Kenya and beyond to exchange on matters of digitalization of the world of work, climate and sustainable urban action and civic participation, producing the outcomes feeding into the preparatory work for the 12th session of the World Urban Forum (4-8 November 2024) #WUF12, Summit of the Future #SOTF, 12th Special Session of AMCEN, #UrbanOctober celebrations, #COP29 and UNCCD #COP16 2. Joining the opening were UN Resident Coordination in Kenya Dr. Stephen Jackson, Susan C Gardner, Ph.D. and Edlam Abera Yemeru. #YoungGamechangers are back from another mission in Jatni! In collaboration with World Health Organization and Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, this mission aimed to equip young individuals with the knowledge and tools to transform urban health in their communities. More details about the mission are here 🔗 bit.ly/3S10l6w The highlights include leading an intensive training of trainers workshop for 15 Young Gamechangers on urban health topics such as air quality, green spaces, and social support systems, and a broader workshop the following day, engaging 40 young participants in identifying urban health challenges and brainstorming solutions. The mission concluded with a debriefing involving WHO India and UN-Habitat India, setting clear action points for future activities. This mission is a significant step towards empowering youth to lead urban health initiatives. With high enthusiasm and active participation, the future of urban health in Jatni looks promising. Earlier this week, we invited World Health Organization to facilitate a 2-day technical training on #UrbanHealth for the youth in Jatni, Odisha, with valuable contributions from the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute. A highlight was that the #YoungGamechangers were engaged in a Training-of-Trainers session to also co-facilitate the group discussions with youth participants and help identify the critical health-related issues of the community. Main themes discussed during the training: 🏥 What are key Determinants of Health (DoH) 🏞 How do public spaces influence and impact health and well-being 🏙 How can the youth contribute towards planning of healthy cities The Young Gamechangers Initiative (#YGI) has an objective to promote youth health and well-being through youth participation in #urbangovernance and using digital tools to improve public spaces and achieve #InclusiveCities.
