In our latest #TutulDialogues episode, Dr. R Balasubramaniam delves into the concept of "seva" (selfless service). In 1897, Swami Vivekananda used the term "seva" for the first time. While often translated as "helping," there's an innate difference we overlook. Seva isn't about hierarchy or expectation. It's a mindset of service, a way of life. It's about seeing divinity in others and serving without judgment or expectation of reward. Today, "servant leadership" is often misunderstood. It's not about being subservient; it's about leading with humility and compassion. It's about recognizing the inherent value in others and empowering them to grow. As Swami Vivekananda said, "The best leader is one who leads like a baby." By expressing love, appreciation, and sympathy, leaders can inspire and succeed. What does seva mean to you? Tutul Consulting reposted this
H: "S, I’ve noticed every time I introduce a new idea with this stakeholder, there’s a pushback. Is this normal?" S: “Yes, resistance is normal. People don’t always resist the idea—they’re often reacting to the uncertainty it brings when you initiate a change H: “So, it’s not just about rejecting the idea?" S: “No. It is triggered by the fear of losing control or having to change ways of working. Peter Block says that “Resistance is an INDIRECT expression of CONCERN” – so it requires us to respond with Empathy (even though it can be a bit frustrating at times) “ H: “Makes sense. The person resisting is NOT the enemy—they are merely trying to make sense of the change? S: Yes, since most of the time resistance (to you) is not personal, we need to empathize with them first. H: "So, instead of pushing through, should I engage with it?” S: “Yes, if persuasion doesn’t work, then, name the resistance you are experiencing. For e.g. if a person continues to give you detailed and totally irrelevant/ unrelated responses to your question, you can say ‘you are giving me a lot of detail’. Or if someone’s starts to raise their voice, you could say “You seem to be angry” H: “Oh, so resistance isn’t a block—it’s part of the process of change. One needs to have the courage to call it out though..” S: ”If empathy is present, it creates a channel, allowing you to move ahead effectively and have the courage. H: “Oh, by the way, S could you please finish reviewing this document. I notice you have been avoiding it” S: “Ah, you are practicing naming the Resistance already, on me H!!!” H: “Haha, yes!” #dealingwithResistance #empathy #MusingsbetweenMeetings #changemanagement Hitakshi Sharma Tutul Consulting Venora Lobo Krishnan Vaidyanathan Vivek Patwardhan
