Reimagining India, School By School

About us

Every example of systems change across the world – the ones that have climbed the trajectory from poor to good – have had new innovative and disruptive schools at the centre of them. They’ve also held renewed pipelines to reconstruct the state of talent in the sector. At The Circle, we’re striving to fuel both. We envision an India that is free of poverty and filled with love. In pursuit of that vision, we aspire to create a network of schools, teachers, and after-school centres that are reinventing the country’s educational system. We’re building an innovative model to build a reinvented circle of schools, after-school centers, and teachers that, together, empower low-income students to change the world. The Circle Incubation Our incubation is an 18-month fully paid, intensive program for entrepreneurs with the courage and commitment to redesign and launch innovative learning experiences for India’s children. The Circle Labs A combination of capacity-building programs, light-touch workshops, media campaigns, school transformation programming, and top-down advocacy efforts.

Check out HOPE, this newly launched school in the middle of Jalalabad, Uttar Pradesh. They just admitted their first few dozen students last week! At the heart of this innovative school is the leadership of Sakshi Srivastava and her co-founder, Dilip Suthar, two Circle Partners. After building a laudable and extensive teacher development organization, Anubhuti Organisation, in Haryana, they’ve now made the impassioned decision to move back to Jalalabad to build this school. Why? They believe that the communities of Jalababad - Sakshi’s hometown - desperately need and deserve something better. They believe that rural India needs a template for transformative education. And they believe that the girls of this small town deserve to dream and vie for a future that is fundamentally reimagined. Check out this video documenting pre-launch journey in our new Off-The-Ground Series. If you’re inspired, Sakshi and Dilip are now searching for a structural engineer to help them launch a new building for students to proudly call school. If you know of anyone, please drop a message in the comments below! The Circle India

These are the communities of Kathiwada, Madhya Pradesh. This rural town has both witnessed and endured a long history of oppression. It’s now a collection of communities that includes Adivasis, Hindus, and Muslims living together. Walking through their narrow roads, last week, was a reminder that oppression runs deep. It has the power to redefine who has voice, and who doesn’t. It has the power to ensure girls don’t attend schools. It has the power to strip people of one of our most fundamental, innate driving forces: the ability to hope and dream for a better tomorrow. This was an oppression, you see, that has the power to leave any outside observer unsettled. Meet Digvijay Singh Kathiwada, Swati Kathiwada, and Shruti Mehta. They’ve partnered over the last year to begin the long process of transforming this community. Digvijay and Swati have been launching programs to rebuild health centres, restore Anganwadis, foster local economic development, build self-sustenance, and introduce sports programming that will cultivate community. They’ve recently brought on Shruti, a Circle Entrepreneur-in-Residence, Teach For India Alum, and now the CEO of Kamal Vidya Niketan, or KVN. KVN is the newly launched school that sits at the heart of this development. Rooted in the pursuit of economic equity and local problem-solvers, it’s just launched with a diverse body of students who represent the communities they belong to: Adivasis, Hindus, and Muslims. I came back thinking about the power of all of our schools, across India, to be microcosms of the India we all want to see. They have the power to rediscover what’s been lost as India’s educational system has modernized and democratized. The power to tap into what is locally relevant and innate. The power to be surrounded by a circle of support that cares. And the power to reinvent - to build a new India that works for everyone. If you’re eager to start designing a school that can also be a microcosm of that new India, join our five-week Starter Program. It’s just a few hours a week. Get your feet with us. "During my time with the Innovation Funding Grant community, I had the opportunity to brainstorm with peers about the challenges I was facing, and others provided valuable input on the issues within our program. The diverse ideas shared by group members were not only inspiring but also offered a unique learning experience, allowing me to gain insights from each one of them. I am now planning to launch this program at a larger scale with a target of 1000 students for next year." Create the change you believe in, like Vivek Kaushik did, with the help of The Circle's Innovation Funding Grant. Apply for the grant through the link in the comments!
