Dr K C Ravi, our Chief Sustainability Officer, shared his insightful views following the #UnionBudget 2024 presented by Finance Minister Smt Nirmala Sitharaman in Parliament yesterday. Appreciating the overall budget, he called it "a refreshingly no-frill budget that addresses the present realities and challenges of the agriculture sector. One of the standout announcements is the release of 109 high-yielding and climate-resilient varieties of 32 field and horticultural crops for cultivation, which marks a significant step forward in advancing agriculture. Collaborative research between public institutions and the private sector to develop newer climate-resilient varieties and farm practices for the various agro-climatic zones in the country will be crucial in helping farmers navigate and manage the emerging challenges in the coming years". However, Dr Ravi also outlined some expectations of the industry,"The agrochemical sector was also expecting schemes such as the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme, an income tax benefit of 200 percent weighted deduction on R&D, and the rationalization of GST rates at par with other agri inputs." #Syngenta #UnionBudget2024 #Sustainability #Agriculture #Agrochemicals #Innovation #ClimateResilience Susheel Kumar K C Ravi Tehseen Zaidi CropLife India

Scorching temperatures, pest pressures, unpredictable weather patterns and regular electricity shortages make for very challenging growing conditions. This is why selecting the right seed to plant is so critical to ensure a crop thrives and delivers strong, reliable yields that ultimately enrich the livelihoods of the grower, their family and their community. We take great pride in supporting growers with high-quality seed varieties, because we know every seed creates an opportunity to grow and succeed in the field - and in life. Building a Sustainable Future Together through Partnership We are happy to announce a significant step in our commitment to mitigating climate change and promoting sustainable agriculture. A Tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Syngenta India Pvt Ltd. and Syngenta Foundation India on their 96th Foundation and Technology Day. Dr SK Chaudhari, DDG, National Resource Management (NRM), ICAR; Mr Rajender Rog, ED, Syngenta Foundation India (SFI) and Dr KC Ravi, Chief Sustainability Officer Syngenta India Pvt Ltd signed the Tripartite MoU. This collaboration aligns with Syngenta’s new sustainability commitments: Higher yields, lower impact; Regenerate soil and nature; Improve rural prosperity; and Sustainable operations.   The MoU is in sync with Syngenta’s unique I-Rise (Inculcate Rural India Skill Enhancement) initiative, designed to engage rural youth in agriculture and provide them with appropriate skills and help them to explore dignified and sustainable income earning opportunities. This program was initiated with the pilot project in 2023 to train 1000 rural youth in 3Es approach i.e., Educate youth in agriculture through the training and mentoring program, engage them in Agri sector through employment, entrepreneurship, or by becoming a lead farmer and elevate their livelihood income. Together, we will support KVKs, agri-entrepreneurs, dealers, distributors, and farmers through awareness, education, and mechanization solutions, enhancing the quality of life for smallholder farmers and rural youth. Sustainability is a much-abused word. It has become a catch call phrase for individuals and businesses keen on asserting their ‘good for society/good for planet credentials’. Cynicism aside, behind the rhetoric and noise, there is serious effort by some businesses to integrate it into their business strategy. As we hurtle towards 2030, the reality is that the private sector has a pivotal role to play in helping to meet the SDGs. A couple of weeks back, I spoke with Chris Argent, Head of Sustainability for AMEA at Syngenta to understand the role of the private sector in global food security #SDG2, on innovations that can catalyse change and help improve the lives and livelihoods of farmers (especially marginal farmers). According to the World Economic Forum, ‘the global food security challenge is straightforward: by 2050 the world must feed two billion people more and the demand for food will be 56% greater than 2010.’ The sector also accounts for a whopping 30% of greenhouse gas emissions and 70% of freshwater withdrawals, so innovation for sustainability is non-negotiable. How is the private sector responding to this challenge? How are businesses innovating for sustainable development? Chris covered some of the issues during our conversation👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾 👉🏾 The link between purpose, profit and sustainability 👉🏾 How organisations can be authentic when speaking about purpose or sustainability 👉🏾 What it means to be a leader in agricultural innovation for Syngenta? 👉🏾 The impact of climate change on small and marginal farmers who make up majority of the world’s farmers and produce over 70-80% of the world’s food (UN FAO 2021) 👉🏾 The ‘Good Growth Plan’ (Indian context) a time bound target to reduce its carbon intensity by 50% by 2030 from a 2016 baseline 👉🏾 The Portfolio Sustainability Framework aimed at increasing transparency to external stakeholders 👉🏾 Changing food preferences and growing trend for sustainably grown food We also spoke about sustainability narratives, reporting, communications and much more. Global non-profit EAT, “Food is the single strongest lever to optimize human health and environmental sustainability on Earth” To hear more, head to the podcast (Link in comments) 👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾

We are delighted to announce the launch of 8th edition of I SAFE in #Yavatmal#Maharashtra.   Shri Sanjay Rathod, Minister of Soil and Water Conservation, Govt of Maharashtra, and Guardian Minister of Yavatmal and Washim Districts, along with Dr. Pankaj Aashiya IAS, District Collector of Yavatmal, flagged off the awareness campaign on safe and responsible use of agrochemicals before the crucial Kharif season. The mobile van will spread awareness on the Do's and Don'ts of spraying activities, including knowledge on good agricultural practices and the importance of health and hygiene among farming communities and their families.   We take pride in our flagship I-SAFE (Inculcating Safety Awareness for Farmers Empowerment) program, which provides training and certification for spray men on various aspects of safety and measures to avoid accidental exposure during spraying activities. Launched in 2019, this first-of-its-kind program Certified Spray Men (CSM) undergo one-day training covering safety protocols, health & hygiene, followed by a live demonstration. Continuing our mission, we plan to empower another 1,000 youth as Certified Spray Men this season.   I-SAFE includes carefully designed components that work closely with farmers to achieve zero exposure. Over 150,000 growers have been trained in health, hygiene & safety since the program's launch under the Farmers’ Training component. These sessions, lasting 3-4 hours, are conducted in selected villages on the recommendation of Agriculture Department, helping farmers and their families understand health, personal hygiene, farm safety, and safe use practices.   At the I-SAFE 8th edition launch, 200 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits were distributed to progressive farmers who have adopted good agricultural practices. A special feature of the event was the felicitation of 50 women farmers for adopting progressive practices in growing crops like soybean, red gram, and cotton. We feel its important to  emotionally connect with the farmers and their families, especially women as they are the harbingers for change and possess the unique ability to educate and influence the whole family.   To ensure sustainable and effective cotton growth, we've established six cotton model farms in Yavatmal. These farms serve as training grounds for farmers, educating them on the safe usage of crop protection products through demonstrations. Additionally, we provide guidance on soil health analysis, the optimum use of fertilizers, pheromone traps for effective pink bollworm management, and crop protection protocols.   The event was attended by many government officials, including Mr. Mandar Patki, Senior Administrative Officer (SAO) & Mr. Pramod Lahale, Assistant Development Officer (ADO).   At Syngenta India, we are dedicated to creating a safer and healthier environment for our farmers thereby making a positive impact on the agricultural landscape of Maharashtra.   #ISAFE #FarmersSafety #SustainableFarming
