Stories from the Field : From Household Chores to Entrepreneurial Ventures According to a study conducted by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) in 2018, the female labor force participation rate in Himachal Pradesh is only 27.7%, much lower than the national average of 32.8%. Women in the Hilly Regions face various challenges and barriers that prevent them from participating in the economic and social development of their communities. Society for the Upliftment of Villagers & Development of Himalayan Areas (SUVIDHA) is working towards  promoting and executing projects for the promotion of Sustainable Agriculture Practices, Water Resources Management, Rural Development, Clean Development Technologies, Digital Education and Health related aspects of Mother and Child Health Care. SBI Foundation, in partnership with SUVIDHA, is tackling the social and economic challenges faced by women in Himachal Pradesh's Sirmour and Solan Districts. Through training programs, group-based enterprise development, and access to finance and markets, the project empowers women to overcome economic vulnerability. Utilizing innovative methods like mobile training units, the initiative ensures that women in remote areas gain the skills and resources needed to start and grow their businesses. This initiative has showcased profound impact by turning housewives and laborers into successful entrepreneurs. With 500 women across 50 villages following suit, the “Himalaya Hill Fresh Fruit Processing Group” serves as an example of empowerment and transformation. Stories from the Field : The unsung Heroes of Rural India In India, 1 in 800 children are born with clubfoot every year. Clubfoot is a birth defect in which one or both the feet of the child are turned inwards. Although this can pose challenges for walking, effective treatment empowers these children to move freely.  Clubfoot can be treated over a period of four to five years using the Ponseti Method. SBI Foundation has collaborated with Anushkaa Foundation for Eliminating Clubfoot, assisting approximately 1,000 children across 15 districts in Uttar Pradesh. This initiative provides specialized treatment for clubfoot, offering a lifeline to families in need. In the heart of rural India, where healthcare resources are scarce, the tireless efforts of ASHA workers shine as beacons of hope. These heroes bridge the gap between the communities and healthcare, bringing life-changing interventions to those who need them the most. Gadag District in Karnataka, situated in the drought-prone Northern Dry Zone, faces frequent agricultural failures due to limited and inconsistent rainfall. This situation forces many farmers to migrate to urban areas for livelihoods. To address water scarcity in agriculture, SBI Foundation, in association with the #Sankalpa_Rura_Development Society, launched an innovative watershed initiative, ‘Raita Bandhu' (Farmers' Friend), under the SBI Gram Seva program on World Water Day, March 22, 2023. The initiative aims to rejuvenate and create community ponds, farm ponds, and farm bunds through a dedicated excavator for small and marginal farmers in the locality. 'Raita Bandhu' has diligently worked, and so far, this initiative has created 120 farm bunds, 40 farm ponds, and rejuvenated 20 community ponds across 20 villages in the Mundargi Block. The initiative has benefited 660 small and marginal farmers and irrigated approximately 3,000 acres of land in these drought-prone villages. During my recent visit to the project location, I had the opportunity to interact with farmers and witness their happiness about this initiative. They shared that their irrigation-related problems have been resolved for the Rabi season, allowing them to stay in the village and work harder in their fields to increase agricultural productivity, ultimately helping to raise their income. I recently had the incredible opportunity to do a monitoring visit to a project that holds a special place in my heart: "𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗵𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗖𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 (𝗟𝗖𝗔) 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀" in Raichuru, Karnataka. The project is implemented by The Association of People with Disability (APD, India), with the support from SBI Foundation. This is not a simplistic CSR project providing services to chosen PWD meeting certain criteria, in the intervention areas we think are important. This project is building an inclusive community, and making it sustainable. There were several memorable moments from the visit :- 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝘂𝗲𝗹'𝘀 𝗦𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗲: Meeting Samuel, a child with Cerebral Palsy, and his family was truly delightful. The mother recalled Samuel’s moments with Mr. @Jibin Sabu(Physiotherapist, APD), and how there has been a significant improvement through the assistive device and regular therapy services. 𝗦𝗮𝗿𝘃𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗹𝗮'𝘀 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀: Witnessing Ms. Sarvamangala confidently showcase her stunning handmade products was inspiring. With seed funding from the project, she now earns 9 K per month, supporting both her parents. (Aamina Farheen, Rehabilitation Executive) 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Learning from the principal how learning sign language has enriched the lives of not just three students but also the entire school community was incredibly uplifting. (@Pradeep DS, Deaf Role Model APD- Take a bow!) The true highlight of my visit was engaging with the 𝗙𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀. It was inspiring to witness a room full of self-advocates who have achieved remarkable community milestones through collective efforts. Their persistent advocacy has made the Raichuru railway station more accessible and secured several social entitlements. The federations have become more than just support groups; they are beacons of change. This project is not just about providing services; it is about building a community where everyone belongs and thrives. To going beyond mere outputs, towards impact! I am thrilled to be a part of this impactful project! Thanks to the wonderful team of Dr. N.S. Glimpses from last month’s eye screening camp we organized in Jangalpur, West Bengal. Over 70 people received free screenings from our team of vision care professionals and received recommendations for prescription glasses, surgery, and other treatments.  This camp is part of our ‘SBIF Eye Care' project in partnership with SBI Foundation, spanning 12 blocks in the Howrah district, aimed at performing 3,000 free cataract surgeries for people from marginalized communities, raising awareness about prevailing eye care issues, their prevention and care, and more.
